Austin Brooks still unbeaten

A sold-out crowd of nearly 2,000 fans enjoyed a memorable night of boxing last night, presented by Toro Promotions, Inc. and Whitfield Haydon Boxing, at the famed Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Washington.

In the main event, rising super featherweight prospect Austin Brooks (11-0, 4 KOs) stopped Anthony Chavez (11-4-1, 3 KOs) in the sixth round. Brooks cracked Chavez with a powerful left that sent Chavez to the canvas. He was able to beat the count, however, Brooks attacked his dazed opponent, unloading a barrage of unanswered punches until referee Joel Scobee waved off the fight.

In the co-feature, featherweight Gregory Cruz (5-2-1, 3 KOs) and Roberto Negrete (4-2-1, 2 KOs) fought to a six-round split-draw.

Undefeated super lightweight Lorenza Caldera (7-0, 4 KOs) stopped Jake “D’ Twins” Bornea (14-5-1, 7 KOs), the former WBO Asia Pacific Youth Flyweight Champion, in the second round.

Former WBO Asia Pacific 130-pound champ Yoshimitsu Kimura (15-3-1, 10 KOs), 129.75, returned to ring action after badly forfeiting his regional belt to Masanori Rikiishi this January, and decked a fine TKO victory over Filipino Jestine Tesoro (9-6, 5 KOs), 130, at 2:36 of the fifth round in a scheduled eight on Thursday in Tokyo, Japan. Kimura had tasted a bitter fifth round stoppage at the hand of Rikiishi, but he displayed a vigorous attack in dropping the game Filipino three times en route to an impressive comeback triumph. 47-year-old former world champion Acelino “Popo” Freitas (41-2, 34 KOs) destroyed YouTuber Junior Duble in the first round on Saturday night at the Clube Hebraica in São Paulo, Brazil. It may have been classified as an exhibition, but Freitas wasn’t playing. He battered Duble from pillar to post and after two knockdowns Duble’s corner threw in the towel after about 70 seconds. Duble, whose main claim to fame is working as a stunt double for Vin Diesel, was doing a lot of trash-talking before the fight and Freitas made him pay.

Looks like Shakur Stevenson will fight Frank “The Ghost” Martin for the vacant WBC lightweight title formerly held by Devin Haney. The WBC ordered mandatory challenger Stevenson to fight the top available contender. #1 rated Vasilliy Lomachenko declined the fight. #3 Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz is apparently lined up for a rematch with Gervonta “Tank” Davis. So #4 Frank Martin got the nod. If Top Rank and PBC can’t reach a deal, it was announced on Saturday’s ESPN telecast that the WBC will stage a purse bid on September 5.

Anderson halts Rudenko; Ajagba wins by DQ

WBO #5, WBA #7, IBF #15 heavyweight Jared “The Real Big Baby” Anderson (16-0, 15 KOs) returned to the ring after 56 days to outclass and stop Andriy Rudenko (35-7, 21 KOs) on Saturday night at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Anderson had it all his way against the durable 39-year-old Rudenko. Rudenko was deducted a point for holding in round five. After that, Anderson launched a barrage of unanswered punches to get a referee’s stoppage. Time was 1:40.

WBC #14 heavyweight Efe Ajagba (18-1, 13 KOs) won by disqualification against previously unbeaten WBC #9, WBA #14 rated Zhan Kossobutskiy (19-1, 18 KOs). Kossobutskiy was deducted two points for low blows in round three and was DQ’d after another low blow in round four.

In a rematch, former world champion Angel ‘Tito’ Acosta (24-4, 22 KOs) hammered out a ten round unanimous decision over former contender Carlos ‘El Chocorroncito’ Buitrago (37-10-1, 21 KOs) in a flyweight fight. Scores were 99-91, 99-91, 98-92. Acosta previously stopped Buitrago in round twelve of a 2018 WBO light fly title defense.

Irish super welterweight ‘King’ Callum Walsh (8-0, 7 KOs) stopped Juan Jose Velasco, (24-5, 15 KOs) of Buenos Aires, Argentina, in four rounds headlining the 360 Promotions Hollywood Fight Nights series on UFC Fight Pass Saturday night at the Commerce Casino in Commerce, California.

Ripping away with combinations, Walsh was on the offensive in the first and fought with poise as he backed and kept Velasco away. Mixing it up in the second, Walsh and Velasco exchanged momentarily and Walsh got the better of the exchange. In the third, Walsh let his hands go as Velasco stood his ground. Continuing to display offense, Walsh outworked Velasco. It was all over after completing four rounds as Velasco could not continue, forcing the referee to stop the fight at the end of four. With the win Walsh retains his WBC Silver super welterweight title.

Co-featured at Hollywood Fight Nights, light heavyweight powerhouse, Umar Dzambekov, (7-0, 6 KOs), a native of Austria made quick work by scoring a first round knockout over David Zegarra, (35-11-1, 22 KOs), of Lima, Peru. Dzambekov ripped Zeggara with a left to begin the fight seconds later Zegarra took a knee as he got up, moments later Dzambekov sent Zegarra to the canvas a second time as referee Jack Reiss stopped the fight at 1:59.

Undefeated welterweight Gor Yeritsyan, (16-0, 14 KOs), of Hollywood by way of Armenia scored a second-round knockout over Rogelio Jun Dolinguez, (25-5-2, 19 KOs), of the Philippines. Yeritsyan began connecting with big punches as he staggered Dolinguez in the first. 2020 Olympic super heavyweight gold medalist Bakhodir Jalolov (13-0, 13 KOs) needed just 2:06 to destroy Onoriode Ehwarieme (20-3, 19 KOs) in the first round in the opening bout on Saturday from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Jalolov, making his Top Rank debut, dropped Ehwarieme three times.

Unified WBA/WBO/IBF heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (21-0, 14 KOs) knocked out WBA regular champion Daniel Dubois (19-2, 18 KOs) in round nine on Saturday night in a driving rainstorm at Tarczyński Arena in Wroclaw, Poland. Usyk outboxed Dubois over the first four rounds. Usyk was hurt by a shot to the belt line ruled low blow in round five and needed several minutes to recover. Usyk peppered Dubois with jabs and straight lefts. Dubois had his best success to the body. Usyk finally dropped Dubois with a combination at the end of round eight and then floored Dubois again in round nine to end it. Dubois was counted out at :48.

In an exciting 10 round main event, unbeaten flyweight Sergio “Yoreme” Mendoza (20-0, 17 KOs) of Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, defeated countryman Erick “Habanerito” Lopez (16-10-2, 10 KOs) of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico by split decisión. It was good two-way action throughout the bout. Lopez scored a knockdown on Mendoza in round two. The much taller Mendoza stood in the pocket and had a solid round nine. Lopez closed strong in round ten, rocking Mendoza with multiple punches to the head. In the end, two judges had it 96-93 and 95-94 for Mendoza while the other judge had it 95-94 for Lopez. Super middleweight upset artist Vladimir Hernandez (14-5, 6 KOs) has done it again! Hernandez defeated hometown hero and previously unbeaten Lorenzo “Truck” Simpson (13-1, 7 KOs) by eight round majority decision on Friday night at the Overtime Elite Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. Hernandez was a non-stop punching machine and prevailed 78-74, 79-73, 76-76. He had previously upset the likes of Julian “J-Rock” Williams, Alfredo Angulo, and Aaron Coley.

Unbeaten middleweight Andreas Katzourakis (11-0, 9 KOs) recovered from a first round knockdown and halted Raphael “Trouble” Igbokwe (16-5, 7 KOs) in round eight. Opening the show was Riverside’s Nate Palencia (1-1) vs. Oakland’s Will Davis (2-1 1KO) in a 4 round, lightweight boxing match. These 130 pounders wanted to make a statement and they sure did! With a lot of inside action in the first round, there was more of the same in the second with both fighters busting each other up. Davis was slightly busier in the third round which made the fight up for grabs going into the fourth. The fighters let it all hang out with each one having their moments. Mayweather-trained “Primetime” Jones debuts with KO

Junior lightweight Dion “Primetime” Jones (1-0, 1 KO) of Las Vegas, Nevada made his professional boxing debut Wednesday night with a knockout victory in the Rodadero at the Burukuka Restaraunt in the beach city of Santa Marta, Colombia. Jones took his time in round one as the very aggressive local Rafael De La Rosa came determined to pull off the upset. Jones turned it up in round two where he abruptly ended matters, dropping De La Rosa who did not beat the count. Jones’ corner was manned by world class trainer Jeff Mayweather.
