Horn: Crawford is playing mind games

By Ray Wheatley — World of Boxing

WBO welterweight champion Jeff Horn says he’s not affected by the psychological tactics employed by the camp of mandatory contender Terence Crawford in advance of their June 9 WBO world title showdown at the MGM Casino in Las Vegas.

“I think the Crawford team are trying to play mind games, changing the date, changing the venue, postponing the fight and now changing the gloves,” Horn told Grantlee Kieza. “I knew they would be throwing curve balls at me left, right and center. But not much fazes me and I’m ready for anything. It just motivates me. It doesn’t matter what gloves I wear. When I hit the guy it’s going to hurt him!”

Ruling opens door for widespread boxing wagering

In a landmark 6-3 ruling Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a federal ban on sports betting. Most U.S states had been prohibited from allowing sports wagering, the notable exception being Nevada. Venues in New Jersey hope to be taking bets within two weeks. A few other states plan on being up and running by summer. Others make take years to get off the ground.

Sports wagering at the corner betting shop or online sportsbook is common in the U.K. and many other countries. However, in the U.S. one had to physically be in the state of Nevada to legally bet, although most Americans either placed wagers with a local “bookie,” or quietly wagered online through an offshore sportsbook.

If you enjoy wagering, boxing is one of the best sports to bet on.

Oscar to GGG: Fight Canelo or I’ll find someone else

By TMZSports.com

Oscar De La Hoya is issuing an ultimatum to Gennady Golovkin — sign the deal to fight Canelo Alvarez in September … or he’ll find someone else who will! Of course, Canelo and GGG were locked in for the rematch on May 5 — until Canelo tested positive for PEDs and pulled out. Golovkin fought Vanes Martirosyan instead and destroyed him.

Now, the two sides are trying to hammer out another deal to get the rematch going … but GGG hasn’t signed on yet. Oscar says his priority is to make the fight, but he isn’t gonna sit around and wait. “He doesn’t want to fight,” De La Hoya told TMZ Sports … “Regardless, Canelo’s fighting in September so it’s all gravy.”

Oscar didn’t name specific replacement fighters, but noted he’ll search for the toughest guy out there — which could be anyone from Jermall Charlo to Billy Joe Saunders to Daniel Jacobs. But, with so much cash on the line for Triple G … we’re guessing the two sides will get a deal done.

Lawson Rolls On With Dearborn Win

By Brad Snyder-The Undercard
Photos by Bob Ryder

Second 2 None Promotions continues to improve, as Friday night the staff put on one of the more evenly matched cards Detroit has seen in a while.

Leon “Lethal” Lawson III (5-0, 3 KOs) continued his rise in boxing with a (40-34, 40-34, 40-34) UD over Antonio Louis Hernandez (0-2) in the 4-Round super welterweight contest. Lawson, who is a lanky 6’5″, has a strong reach and a frame that would not suggest power. But Lawson does have some power in his shots. Lawson dominated knocking Hernandez down in the 2nd. The jab proved a weapon in the 2nd and 3rd Rounds. A body shot and his ability to walk Hernandez down is what dropped Hernandez in the 3rd, as well. Towards the end of the fight, Hernandez was broken. Continue reading “Lawson Rolls On With Dearborn Win”

Munguia thanks Nevada Commission

“This victory is something huge for me,” said newly crowned WBO junior middleweight champion Jaime Munguia after dethroning Sadam Ali Saturday night. “This is a dream come true. Every fighter dreams of this.” Munguia took the fight on short notice after Ali’s original opponent Liam Smith pulled out.

The 21-year-old Tijuana puncher was previously chosen to replace Canelo Alvarez against middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, but that bout was shot down by the NSAC. “I want to thank the Nevada Commission for making this opportunity possible as they didn’t allow me to fight Gennady Golovkin,” Munguia stated. “I want to show that I am ready to fight at the highest level and with the best fighters.”

After Saturday night’s performance, the NSAC may want to reconsider their position should a Golovkin-Munguia fight come up again.

Munguia destroys Ali to win WBO 154lb belt

By Boxing Bob Newman at ringside
Photos: Andy Newman

Late sub Jaime Munguia (29-0, 25 KOs) dethroned Sadam Ali (26-2, 14 KOs) by fourth round KO to claim the WBO junior middleweight title on Saturday night at the Turning Stone Resort in Verona, New York. Munguia dropped Ali four times. Official time was 1:02 of round four.

Ali looked like a kid in with a giant. Despite Ali being eight years his senior, Munguia looked a monster compared to the former welterweight Ali. The size and power plated immediately as a thunderous left hook dropped Ali hard in the first. Late in the same round, two lefts followed by two rights to the back of the head of the falling Ali dropped him again. In the second, Ali went down again, but managed to fight back and survive the round. A lunging lead left hook in the fourth put Ali down again, prompting referee Gary Rosado to wave it off at 1:04 of the round. Continue reading “Munguia destroys Ali to win WBO 154lb belt”

The human buzz saw Armenian rocked Vargas in the last minute of the opening round with a straight right to the face, knocking him into the ropes, possibly taking the round. Round two saw more strategic, yet relentless pressure from Hovhannisyan. While he missed more than he landed, what he did land was eye-catching, drawing wild cheers from a throng of Armenian fans in the crowd. Lomachenko KOs Linares in ten, wins WBA title

By Matt Richardson at ringside
Photos: Sumio Yamada

Vasily Lomachenko continued to make a strong case as the very best fighter in the world on Saturday night when he knocked out WBA lightweight champion Jorge Linares in the tenth round of an excellent, high-paced action fight in Madison Square Garden in New York City. Lomachenko (11-1, 9 KOs) may have won his third belt in as many weight classes but he had to fight to win the title, rising from a sixth-round knockdown and some scary moments later in the bout to break down the bigger, stronger Linares.

Linares (44-4, 27 KO’s), riding a multi-year unbeaten streak, showed a lot of heart, ability and technique. He fought on a high-level. But as the fight progressed, his face got busted up and by the time he was dropped with a left to the body in the 10th he was a thoroughly defeated fighter. He attempted to rise but the fight had been beaten out of him and the bout was called off with 52 seconds remaining in the round. Continue reading “Lomachenko KOs Linares in ten, wins WBA title”

Undercard Results from Madison Square Garden

By Matt Richardson at ringside

Unbeaten welterweight Carlos Adames (14-0, 11 KO’s) maintained his unblemished record by winning a 10-round unanimous decision against the very tough Alejandro Barrera in the co-featured fight of the night. The judges scored the fight 98-92, 97-93 and 96-94. Adames rocked Barrera (27-5, 17 KO’s) with a combination to the body and head at the end of the second round. A hard hook to Barrera’s jaw then hurt him badly along the ropes but as referee Mike Ortega looked in from the outside, the bell rang, momentarily halting any advance from Adames. Barrera was stunned again in the third after absorbing a right from Adames and he was rocked again after taking the same shot in the fifth. But as the fight wore on and Adames’ inability to score a knockout became more apparent, the pace changed. Barrera came on late in the fight and in the final few rounds it was actually Adames, not Barrera, who was backpedaling around the ring. The success Adames had early on in the fight, however, provided enough cushion to comfortably secure the decision win. Continue reading “Undercard Results from Madison Square Garden”

Super Lightweight George Rincon wasted little time in handling matters against Corey, “The Warrior” Gulley. With roughly five seconds to go in round one, a picture perfect right to the chin dropped Gulley on his back. He beat the count and looked recovered entering the second. Moments into the round however, a Rincon right dropped Gulley again. Rincon decided to close the show with a flurry, pinning Gulley on the ropes, prompting referee Gary Rosado to jump in at 0:37 of the round. Rincon now 4-0, 2 KOs, while Gulley evens out at 2-2-2. After more than two years since becoming the mandatory contender for WBC champ Adonis Stevenson, and almost one year since his last fight, Eleider jumped at the opportunity to face Kovalev.

Sergey Kovalev: “Alvarez has earned his title shot but Chickenson dodged him, just like he dodged me. I want to fight the best in my division. Alvarez took the fight with me without hesitation. I respect that and I am excited to face him in my return to Atlantic City.”

Eleider Alvarez: “I am extremely happy. I said yes as soon as I had the offer! I waited for a long time to get a shot at a world title. I don’t want to hear about Adonis Stevenson anymore: I am focused on Sergey Kovalev!”

Egis Klimas, Sergey’s manager: “Eleider Alvarez is a great competitor. That is probably why Stevenson refused to fight him. Sergey will face anyone, any time, any place. If Adonis is too scared to take the fight, Sergey is happy to step up and fight Alvarez. He earned this opportunity.”

Aikens spoils Gingras’ comeback bid

By Matt Thompson
Photos: Pattee Mak

In the main event of a nine-bout card promoted by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Atlantic City’s Antowyan Aikens derailed the comeback of local favorite Rich Gingras via unanimous decision over 6 somewhat frustrating rounds contested in the super middleweight division.

Boxing and moving throughout, the much taller Aikens controlled distance with a jab, landing an occasional counterpunch as Gingras stalked his elusive opponent, loading up with shots that for the most part missed. Losing a point in the last round for throwing Gingras to the canvas during one of the frequent clinches, Aikens still pulled off the victory by scores of 58-55 twice and 57-56. Aikens improves to 13-4-1, I KO while Gingras drops to 15-5-1, 9 KOs. Continue reading “Aikens spoils Gingras’ comeback bid”
