Three-time former world champion Roman “Rocky” Martinez (29-3-3, 17 KOs) will return to the ring Friday, June 1 in Barranquilla Colombia, in a 10 round bout in what will be his first professional fight at 135 pounds. Martinez, who was world champion three times at super featherweight, will rise in division for the first time in his career. “After many years at the same weight and my body does not assimilate it well. I didn’t feel the same strength in my last fight against Lomachenko,” said Martinez.

Rocky hopes that a victory in his next fight will lead him to get a world title opportunity at 135 pounds, where he aspires to become champion for the fourth time in his career. Continue reading “Rocky Martinez returns at 135”

Klitschko rates Joshua and Wilder

By Ray Wheatley – World of Boxing

Future Hall of Famer Wladimir Klitschko was asked who is the best heavyweight between his former conqueror IBF, WBA, WBO champion Anthony Joshua and WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder. “They are completely different fighters,” Klitschko told BBC. “I know both of them. They were both at my training camp. We spent a lot of time with each other….it’s very difficult to calculate where Deontay Wilder’s punches are coming from. But the strength, the core, the foundation that Anthony Joshua has, in addition to being an Olympic champion, and he has the great amateur experience that Wilder does not have. I’ll be happy, super happy if I’m able to see him (Anthony Joshua) succeed. I told him ‘the more you shine, the more I shine.'”

Arum: Loma-Linares what boxing’s all about

“It’s a challenge, but that’s what makes a fighter one of the all-time greats… challenges,” states Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum. “(Lomachenko) was great at 126. He devastated everybody at 130. Now, he’s moving up to 135, and people say, ‘Is this a bridge too far?’ And his father, who is a great trainer says, ‘No this isn’t a bridge too far.’

“We’re going to see on Saturday. That’s what boxing is all about. If there aren’t any challenges, if there aren’t any obstacles, who the hell wants to watch it?”

Lomachenko-Linares Final Presser

Photos: Mikey Williams/Top Rank

WBO super featherweight champion Vasyl “Hi-Tech” Lomachenko (10-1, 8 KOs) and WBA lightweight Jorge “El Nino de Oro” Linares (44-3, 27 KOs) held their final press conference Thursday at Madison Square Garden in New York City. ESPN will televise.

Vasyl Lomachenko: “I want to thank Linares for taking this challenge. Saturday night, it’s going to be a good bout, and we’re going to find out who is the best. The way this bout is going to go… who knows? It’s boxing. It’s going to be a fight, and after that, we’re going to see.”

Jorge Linares: “I’ve been working hard for the last few fights preparing for this fight. I knew Lomachenko wanted it. I wanted it. So I was very confident that Golden Boy, Teiken and Top Rank were going to get it done. The last two opponents I faced were southpaws. Purposely. I was preparing psychologically and physically to fight Vasiliy Lomachenko. I’ve had him on my radar. I believe, and trust me when I say this, the fight is going to get more intense as the rounds go on.”

Kanalas: I can do big things in the ring

Hungarian invader Szilveszter “The Silent Assassin” Kanalas (14-7, 9 KOs) has a plan designed to upset local favorite and 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Nico Hernandez (4-0, 3 KOs) in their May 19th PPV showdown for the vacant fringe IBA flyweight championship at Kansas Star Arena in Mulvane, Kansas. It will be the first world championship boxing match ever held in the state of Kansas.

Two years ago, Kanalas became one of the youngest (17) world champions ever, when he defeated fellow Hungarian boxer Jozsef Ajtai for the fringe WBF super flyweight title. He later had a rough patch where he suffered five KO losses in six fights, but in his last outing he outpointed Szilveszter Ajtai (12-10-1, 7 KOs) in a four-rounder and he’s not fazed by fighting hometown hero Hernandez in a twelve-rounder in his backyard.
