Dogboe-Magdaleno gets personal

The verbal haymakers were flying Thursday afternoon as World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior featherweight champion Jessie Magdaleno and No. 1 contender Isaac Dogboe faced off at the final press conference for their ESPN-televised world championship main event, Saturday at The Liacouras Center.

Dogboe heated things up when he called Magdaleno “the worst world champion ever” before questioning whether he could make the weight.

“You look worse than me,” Magdaleno responded. “You look like an alien.”

Dogboe mentioned that Magdaleno had blocked him on Facebook when the fight was announced.

“I guess I send shivers into people’s spines,” Dogboe said.

“I can’t beat him any uglier than he already is,” Magdaleno said. “He’s dog ugly. Come Saturday, we’re going to give him the name that he deserves…. the ugly Dogboe.” Continue reading “Dogboe-Magdaleno gets personal”

Fury credits Wilder diss for comeback

At a press conference today in Manchester, former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury credited WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder for inspiring his comeback.

“Really, it was Deontay Wilder who spurred me on and gave me the ambition to return,” Fury stated. “He said I couldn’t do it, definitely not, Tyson Fury is done. I was walking along the canal with my dog at the time and I thought ‘I’m a fat pig look at the state of me.’ I felt like jumping in the canal and drowning. I thought I will turn this around and come back and knock him out! …I believe I could tie one hand behind my back and beat AJ and Wilder, as well.”

Fury will return on June 9 in his first bout since defeating Wladimir Klitschko in 2015. No opponent has been named.

Vargas: I’m ready to beat Hovhannisyan

By Gabriel F. Cordero

WBC super bantamweight champion Rey Vargas (31-0, 22 KOs) discussed his upcoming defense against Azat “Crazy A” Hovhannisyan (14-2, 11 KOs) on May 12 at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, NY. The 27-year-old champion is currently training at the famed Romanza Gym in Mexico City, Mexico, under the supervision of Hall of Fame Trainer Ignacio “Nacho” Beristaín, along with Oscar Ortiz and Fabian and Emilio Ramirez.

“I know that Hovhannisyan has some experience fighting against Mexicans, but not all of us are the same. I know how to box and brawl. It’s going to be an interesting fight because he’s a brawler who knows how to move when he decides to. We also can’t take away the fact that he has a lot of power. It’s interesting that we have fought a similar opponent [Ronny Rios]. He knocked him out in six rounds, while I defeated him by unanimous decision. Because of that there may be some doubts, but I’ll make things clear May 12.”

Golovkin: I no longer think about Canelo

“I’m glad to be back in the ring and giving a fight to my fans,” said WBA, WBC, and for now IBF middleweight world champion Gennady Golovkin during a workout this week. “I’m happy that Cinco De Mayo will still have boxing. It’s good for the sport. I want to stay active. I’d like to fight four or five times every year…when my fight with Canelo was canceled I never stopped training. I wanted a fight on Cinco De Mayo. I stayed in Big Bear working hard with Abel hoping I’d still be able to have a fight.

Photo: Tom Hogan – Hoganphotos/GGG Promotions

“Canelo? Right now he’s over. Do I want to have the rematch in September? We’ll see. It’s a different deal. The boxing business is crazy. I’ll fight Canelo again. Ask him if he wants to fight me. I no longer think about Canelo. I’m only focused on this fight.”

“I’m still comfortable at 160 pounds. There are no big money fights at 168 pounds and besides, I’m small at 160. I only ask for fights. I want more big fights. Huge fights. Title unification fights. I want to stay champion. It should be a clean sport. That’s important to me.”

Suspended Cuadras enters rehab

Former WBC flyweight champion Carlos Cuadras has been temporarily suspended by the WBC and has entered a rehabilitation program for drug and alcohol abuse. Cuadras has voluntarily entered the program with the intention to eradicate once and for all his unfortunate addiction to certain unnamed recreational drugs and alcohol.

Mauricio Sulaiman, WBC President spoke at length with Cuadras and expressed the WBC’s absolute support during this process. “Carlos Cuadras admitted that fame, glory and money, which come from success in the ring, haunted him and he slowly became weak to the temptations and peer pressure from his pseudo friends,” he said. Fresno hosts Ancajas-Sultan

By Nick Giongco

The mandatory defense of Jerwin Ancajas of the IBF super-flyweight title against Jonas Sultan, the first all-Filipino world title fight in almost a century, will take place at the Selland Arena in Fresno, California, according to Top Rank head Bob Arum. Las Vegas had earlier been considered but the Hall of Fame promoter finally decided that Fresno, the main city in the Central Valley region of California between San Francisco and Los Angeles, will be the venue of the historic match.

If Ancajas gets past Sultan, Arum will line him up against Kal Yafai, the WBA champion, in a unification battle in the late summer or early in the fall. Of course, Yafai will only get the chance to test Ancajas if he retains his title on the undercard of the Ancajas headliner.

Oscar: Canelo’s gonna freaking wail on GGG

By TMZSports.com

We already told you Gennady Golovkin’s camp was targeting a rematch with Canelo Alvarez for September … and now Oscar De La Hoya has confirmed that’s the plan. The Golden Boy touched down in NYC where we asked all about his #1 fighter and the alleged tainted Mexican beef that led to a positive PED test, ruining plans for a May 5 rematch with GGG.

“Canelo is getting really the short end of the stick here because obviously he’s a popular fighter and a lot of people are gonna hate on him,” Oscar says. “But he’s been one of the cleanest fighters I’ve known. He’s passed numerous of tests, and you know … it was very unfortunate.” Continue reading “Oscar: Canelo’s gonna freaking wail on GGG”

Dogboe: Magdaleno the worst champion ever

By David Finger

For many Americans on the East Coast and around the Gulf of Mexico, there is a recognition that hurricane season is fast approaching. And as every meteorologist will tell you, almost every hurricane that hits the United States starts off as a storm off the coast of West Africa.

Photo: David Finger

Well, if the rumors about interim WBO junior featherweight champion Isaac “Royal Storm” Dogboe (17-0, 11 KOs) are true, hurricane season may come early this year. The Royal Storm is set to touch down in Philadelphia on April 28th when he takes on undefeated WBO junior featherweight champion Jessie Magdaleno (25-0, 18 KOs) in an intriguing battle of champions.

But although the two undefeated champions were once cordial to each other, with Isaac considering Jessie as a friend, there is no question today that there is no love loss between the two men now. The bad blood between the two men started back in February when Magdaleno posted a picture on his Instagram page of him holding a mop in the boxing ring with Isaac Dogboe’s head at the end of the mop.
