WBO 105-pound champ Ryuya Yamanaka (16-2, 5 KOs), 105, impressively kept his belt in his initial defense as he was awarded a TKO victory after the eighth round when Mexican Moises Calleros (28-8-1, 16 KOs), 105, quit on the stool because of his absorption of punishment in the eighth on Sunday in Kobe, Japan.

Yamanaka utilized his faster left hand to be leading on points: Gerard White (US), Jose Roberto Torres (Puerto Rico) both 80-72, and Salven Lagumbay (Philippines) 78-74, all for Yamanaka. The ref was Jose Rivera (Puerto Rico). Bruno: Parker is a very dangerous guy

By Ray Wheatley — World of Boxing

Former WBC heavyweight champion Frank Bruno has warned WBA, IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua that WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker will be dangerous when they clash in Cardiff, Wales on March 31. “Anthony Joshua has got the size, the power, and the skill, and Parker is a guy who comes to him all the time,” Bruno told Sky Sports. “If Joshua moves around and uses his reach and his power, he should make it make it easier for himself. Joshua has a lot of skill, a lot of size, a lot of power. If he just relaxes and uses Parker to come in, it is as simple as that. If he is going to get macho and start wanting to tear up with him, then Parker is a very dangerous guy, very fit — he is on you all the time.”

Browne aims to win over Aussie fans

By Ray Wheatley — World of Boxing

Former WBA heavyweight champion Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne faces WBC #1 Dillian Whyte on Saturday at the 02 Arena in London. Fighting in Whyte’s adopted hometown may be just as well for Browne, whose popularity in his home country of Australia has been negatively affected by two failed drug tests.

“Jeff Horn, for example after he beat Manny Pacquiao, was given the key to his city and a parade,” Browne told Sky Sports. “I had four reporters wait for me at the airport, and that’s it. That was disappointing. It was because of who Horn fought – if I had fought Wladimir Klitschko, for example, it would have been different. Once the drugs thing came up, there were 10 people waiting to talk.” Continue reading “Browne aims to win over Aussie fans”

Briscoe Awards this Sunday

After ten years of celebrating the biggest and best achievements of the Philadelphia-area boxing scene, the Briscoe Awards will change the timing of their annual event, from October to March.

“For a few years now, I’ve considered moving the awards up to the first part of the year,” said John DiSanto, founder of the Briscoe Awards. “The original Fall time slot caused a lot of confusion, because by the time we gave out the awards, the fights were old news. Moving to March will allow us to give out the awards shortly after the fight year ends. I’m a little nervous about making a change, but in the long run, the move will only make the Briscoe Awards better.” Continue reading “Briscoe Awards this Sunday”
