WBC super featherweight champion Miguel “Alacrán” Berchelt (33-1, 29 KOs) scored a brutal third round TKO over challenger Maxwell Awuku (44-4-1, 30 KOs) to retain his title on Saturday at the Oasis Arena in Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico. Hometown favorite Berchelt dropped Awaku twice in round three, then got the stoppage with his follow-up barrage. Time was 2:43.

“I feel very happy and satisfied,” said Berchelt afterward. “This is a very special night for me. I fulfilled a dream I had as a child…I didn’t feel a punch and from the first knockdown knew I would knock him out.” He added that he wants the big names in the division for his next fight and wants to unify the title. Lundy defeats Corley in Philly

In the main event at Philadelphia’s 2300 Arena, local lightweight Hamerin’ Hank Lundy, 29-6-1, 14 KOs, won an 8-round unanimous decision over ancient but still-dangerous former world champ DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley, 50-29-1, 28 KOs, of DC.

The fight featured consistent action, but it was Lundy who did most of the chopping on this night. After splitting the first two rounds, Lundy went on a roll, banked round after round, and even dropped Corley in the fourth. After eight, Lundy took the decision by scores of 78-73 and 79-72 twice. Padilla remains unbeaten

By David Robinett at ringside

World Fighting Championships (WFC), a promotional outfit based in Las Vegas, returned to Rancho Mirage, California, on Saturday night with its WFC 83 event featuring both professional and amateur boxing, before 1,600 fans at the Agua Caliente Casino Resort. In the main event, local featherweight Javier Padilla (5-0-1, 5 KOs) remained unbeaten with a second-round stoppage of Joseph Cole (1-5, 1 KO) in a scheduled four-round contest. Padilla, trained by renowned Southern California-based trainer Joel Diaz, conceded the first round to Cole, allowing the Louisiana invader to circle him in the center of the ring, biding his time while repeatedly eating Cole’s left jab. In round two though Padilla unleashed his right hand, clubbing Cole several times with it during the round before an overhand right dropped Cole to his knees. Cole was able to beat the count but the very next punch that landed was another overhand right by Padilla, which caused Cole to do a silly dance with only the ropes keeping him up. Referee Wayne Hedgepeth immediately jumped in to wave the fight over, with the official time of the stoppage at 2:53 of round two. Continue reading “Padilla remains unbeaten”

Roman was coming off a KO win in December over future Hall of Famer Orlando Salido.

Local female super flyweight favorite Diana “Bonita” Fernandez (17-2, 4 KOs) scored a stunning eighth round knockout over Noemi “NoNo” Bosques (11-11-3, 2 KOs). Fernandez sent Bosques to the canvas twice forcing the fight to stopped.

Sanchez Throws Shutout

By Jim Jenkins, courtesy Sacramento Bee

Setting a drumbeat pace with a punishing lead right hand, crowd favorite Alan Sanchez (20-3-1) of nearby Fairfield continued his strong presence in the welterweight division with a lopsided win over Ramses Agaton (20-7-3) of Mexico City in their main event Saturday night at Cache Creek Casino Resort in Brooks, Calif. Minus a knockdown, Sanchez still took all eight rounds convincingly on the judges’ cards, prompting promoters Don Chargin and Paco Damian to ponder a bigger stage for their Northern California prospect. Olympian Nico Hernandez still unbeaten

By Bill Green at ringside

In the main event, 2016 Bronze Medalist, Nico Hernandez, thrilled his “Legion of Boom” hometown crowd, by capturing the vacant IBA Flyweight title.

Photo: Tony Schock, GS Memorymaker

As the bell rang to start the first, chants of Nico….Nico filled the air. Hernandez wouldn’t waste any time as he unleashed a powerful Tyson-esque body attack, that bruised and battered the sides/midsection displaying redness all over the body of the California challenger. Hernandez showed a little bit of everything as he switched to southpaw at times, used his jab, slipped and countered all the while displaying his trademark power that captured USA fans back in 2016 to fall in love with the Kansas native. Chants of Nico, Nico continued and Hernandez simply was like a shark stalking his prey, circling, firing and ultimately pouncing on Torres in rd five. Hall of Famer Steve Smoger had no choice to halt the fight and rescue the brave and short noticed replacement fighter Torres, who simply was taking too much punishment. Hernandez picks up the IBA vacant Flyweight title with a brutal and impressive 5th round TKO. Time of the stoppage was :55 in round 5. Wichita clearly has something special in Hernandez.

More details to come on a potential May return. Continue reading “Olympian Nico Hernandez still unbeaten”

New opponent for Nico Hernandez

By Bill Green

Update: Nico Hernandez 117.6 vs. Victor Torres 120.4 — Both within the 3lb contracted difference. We have a fight.

Due to visa custom and weather issues, Nico Hernandez’ opponent Jozef Atjai will be replaced by late sub Victor Torres from California. The vacant IBA title will remain at stake. Additionally, a weigh-in at 3pm will take place with a contract weight of no more than a 3lb weight difference.

While Torres doesn’t boast the flashy record of Atjai he is extremely durable as he has never been stopped. Matchmaker Whitfield Haydon, stated “the kid is durable, tough, determined, tremendous heart, very offense-minded, this will be a much different look for Niko. This kid has an all or nothing crowd-pleasing approach. He also has a deadly nice left hook. Nico will need to mentally and physically adjust for him, he’s no slouch.”

Ximenez wins big in Dallas

By Jeff Zimmerman
Photos by Lucio Quintero

It took everything for featherweight Ray Ximenez (17-1, 4 KOs) to outbox late replacement Eugene Lagos (12-4-2, 7 KOs) at the Bomb Factory in Dallas, Texas Friday night in the main event of the Roy Jones Boxing event in association with Montoya Boxing. Ximenez out of Dallas was originally scheduled to fight John Vincente Moralde out of the Philippines but instead fought his fellow countryman Lagos who was in shape and training in Los Angeles when he got the call.

Ximenez always has a sense of flair and style when he enters the ring as he came out with his hair dyed red on top and pink and white trunks that looked like pieces of rug cut, hanging from his waist. They flopped all night along with the mop of red hair on his head. Continue reading “Ximenez wins big in Dallas”

Lundy: Corley talked himself into an a$$ whooping

It’s too early to start calling him the “new” Hank Lundy, but the Philadelphia warhorse known affectionately as “Hammerin’” Hank has starting thinking about his future outside of the ring while keeping his sights set firmly on the present. As he prepares for tomorrow’s fight against ageless Washington, D.C. native DeMarcus Corley at the 2300 Arena, Lundy is confident as ever in both his campaign for a world title at 135 pounds and his life beyond boxing, which he’s helped secure through wise investments.

Three years ago, Lundy (28-6-1, 14 KOs) started his own cleaning company, Hammerin’ Hank Cleaning Services, Inc., cleaning houses and businesses in the Philadelphia area. In August, he added a third job to his resume, starting a position as a checker for a local trucking company, where he inspects packages before they hit the road.
