Selby ready to defend IBF title Saturday

IBF featherweight champion Lee Selby insists that re-aligning with Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren is the final cog in his quest to secure universal recognition as the world’s top featherweight. “The Welsh Mayweather” makes a fourth defense of the IBF strap Saturday on Showtime’s Facebook page.

“Frank has got Josh Warrington and Carl Frampton so those fights should be easy to make and hopefully Scott Quigg can also hop on board so we can have a round robin. Everyone can make money and we’ll find out who’s the best,” said Selby, who meets unbeaten Mexican southpaw Eduardo Ramirez on a card that also features IBF super middle boss James DeGale in world title action.

Selby rated the other champions. Continue reading “Selby ready to defend IBF title Saturday”

Lomachenko: Salido is nobody now

Arch-rivals Vasyl Lomachenko and Orlando “Siri” Salido will be going head-to-head against each other on separate networks this Saturday. Lomachenko takes on Guillermo Rigondeaux in an ESPN clash between two-time Olympic gold medalists in New York City. Salido meets Miguel “Mickey” Roman on HBO in Las Vegas.

If both are victorious, there is speculation that Lomachenko and Salido could meet in a grudge rematch. Then again, maybe not.

Vasyl Lomachenko: I don’t think he’s going to fight me because he already found, to him, a good excuse. He’s been saying, ‘I don’t need this bout. Lomachenko needs this bout. So because Lomachenko needs this bout you need to pay me good money.’ That’s just his excuse and Salido is nobody now. Continue reading “Lomachenko: Salido is nobody now”

Ali dethrones Cotto, seizes WBO 154lb title

Puerto Rican boxing legend Miguel Cotto (41-6, 33 KOs) came up short in his final Saturday night in front of 12,391 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Former Olympian Sadam Ali (27-1, 14 KOs) scored a twelve round unanimous decision over Cotto to take Cotta’s WBO junior middleweight world title by scores of 115-113, 116-112, 115-113.

Both fighters started cautiously, testing each other with the jab in effort to see what lay ahead the next possible 12 rounds. Ali wobbled Cotto in the 2nd with a stunning straight right but seconds later went down via a slip to kill any momentum he may have had. The 3rd brought back and forth action from both fighters leading to intelligent exchanges and a more dominant Cotto round. Ali then turned the tables on Cotto in the 4th, landing overhand right hooks that stopped Cotto in his tracks and building his confidence. Round 6 saw Cotto deliver a right hook that sent Ali flying to the ropes, reminding the younger fighter whose goodbye party it was. Continue reading “Ali dethrones Cotto, seizes WBO 154lb title”

Van Rooyen stops Phetani in six

By Ron Jackson

Barend van Rooyen who will celebrate his 40th birthday on December 23 won the vacant South African middleweight title when he stopped Yanga Phetani in the sixth round at the Kempton Park Indoor Sports Centre on Saturday night. Phetani, 37, had a good opening round using his greater height and reach to keep Van Rooyen on the outside.

In round two Van Rooyen began to work on the inside as he landed stinging shots to the body that caused Phetani to wince every time a blow landed. Van Rooyen continued to work the body in the third round as he backed Phetani up against the ropes and this was the pattern of the fight through rounds four and five. Phetani tired badly in the sixth round and when he was not fighting back referee Jaap van Niewenhuizen waved the fight off at 2 minutes 30 seconds into the round. In a clash between unbeaten super bantamweights, WBC world champion Rey Vargas (31-0, 22 KOs) outscored Oscar Negrete (17-1, 7 KOs) to retain his title on Saturday night at MSG. Vargas was cut over both eyes by headbutts, but won 119-108, 119-108, 120-108.

Both fighters had the agility and speed to trouble each other which led to an entertaining bout filled with back and forth action. Vargas came out of the gate running as he pressed Negrete into the corners in nearly every exchange, leading with his left jab to open up the right hook with ease thanks to his longer reach. By the middle rounds Negrete decided that fighting on the inside would be a better strategy and found success as Vargas’ reach was neutralized. WBO #6 junior flyweight Angel “Tito” Acosta (17-1, 17 KOs) dismantled #4 rated Juan “Pinky” Alejo (25-5-1, 15 KOs) for the vacant WBO world title on Saturday night at MSG. The San Juan fighter Acosta brought the pain and sought out to punish Alejo from the opening bell, pressing the action and landing uppercuts that snapped back Alejo. During the middle rounds, Alejo was able to land some menacing hooks and remind Acosta that he is was still a threat in the ring. The end came calling for Alejo in the 10th round from a crushing left hook from Acosta that sealed the deal. Official time of the stoppage was 1:33 in round 10.

The belt became vacant when unbeaten two-time world champion Kosei Tanaka abruptly vacated the title earlier in the week to move up to the flyweight category to pursue his third belt. As the result, the Acosta-Alejo bout was upgraded from interim to full world title.

Japan’s Fujioka wins fifth female world belt

By Joe Koizumi
Photos by Naoki Fukuda

42-year-young Japanese female warrior, Naoko Fujioka (17-2, 7 KOs), 107.5, impressively acquired her fifth world belt when she showed a fine performance in winning the vacant WBO 108-pound belt by a unanimous decision (99-91, 98-92, 96-94) over previously unbeaten Yokasta Valle (13-0, 6 KOs), 106.25, over ten hard-fought rounds on Friday in Tokyo, Japan. Despite the unanimous tallies it was a very competitive fight, both showing everything they had. Fujioka tied the record of Puerto Rican Amanda Serrano with her fifth belt around the small waist. From the start Naoko was an aggressor, while Yokasta fully utilized her footwork and occasionally threw sharp one-two combinations. Unfortunately did Valle sustain a deep and wide cut in round five, which became a nuisance for here from then on. Fujioka kept herself busy and tricky all the way to avert Valle’s retaliation. Naoko, seventeen years her senior, swept last four rounds with her aggressiveness and agility as well. Yokasta, a stylish footworker, kept herself elusive, but apparently looked overpowered by the shifty and hard-punching.

Snider mauls McCarty in 2

By Jeff Zimmerman at ringside

In the main event at Gas Monkey Live in Dallas, Texas heavyweight Shamarian Snider (8-1-1, 6 KOs) battered Randy McCarty (2-3-1) over two rounds, dropping him twice, once in each of the first two rounds. It was clear early on that McCarty was no match for Snider as he was taking big shots early to the face. McCarty showed toughness and withstood early bombs from Snider in the first round, but in the 2nd round it was only a matter of time before it ended. Snider was patient as the crowd was in a frenzy wanting the knockout, but McCarty would not go quietly as he landed a few shots of his own. But in the end, after the second knockdown in round two, McCarty got slowly to his feet as Referee Robert Chapa waived off the contest. The time of the stoppage was 2:50 in round two of the scheduled four. Snider got the TKO in his 8th win as a pro. Continue reading “Snider mauls McCarty in 2”
