Photos by Naoki Fukuda

Unbeaten OPBF 105-pound champ, WBC#11/WBA#12/IBF#13 Tsubasa Koura (12-0, 8 KOs), 104.5, barely kept his regional belt as he had a tough time coping with game and gallant compatriot Masataka Taniguchi (8-2, 6 KOs), 105, but showed a last surge to earn a hairline majority verdict (115-114, 115-113, 114-114) over twelve see-saw rounds on Saturday in Tokyo, Japan.

It was such a close affair that they mixed it up with solid shots each other. After the fourth, the champ Koue was leading on points—39-38, 39-37, 38-38. After the eighth, however, Taniguchi overcame his early deficits on points and was slightly ahead 77-76 for him, 76-76 twice. It became a four-round fight with Koura scoring with a little more accurate shots to be awarded a very close decision. Continue reading “Koura squeaks by Taniguchi to keep OPBF 105lb belt”

Kuroda stops Matsuo to keep Japanese 112lb belt

By Joe Koizumi
Photos by Naoki Fukuda

In the main event, Japanese flyweight titlist Masayuki Kuroda (28-7-3, 16 KOs), 112, retained his national belt as he proved too pugnacious and powerful for overmatched underdog Mako Matsuyama (8-13-2, 3 KOs), 112, and finally halted him with his corner tossing in the towel at 2:25 of the seventh round on Friday in Tokyo, Japan.

It’s the second defense for Kuroda, who had failed to once win the WBA 112-pound belt by a hard-fought but unanimous decision to Juan Carlos Reveco in Kawasaki in 2013. Kuroda, now 31, recently recaptured the national title by defeating Yuta Matsuo last February. Kuroda is scheduled to face mandatory challenger, hard-hitting Katsunori Nagamine on March 3.

Inoue stops Ratchasi to win OPBF, WBO ASPAC 154lb belts

By Joe Koizumi
Photos by Naoki Fukuda

Unbeaten Japanese 154-pound champ, IBF#15/WBO#15 Takeshi Inoue (12-0-1, 7 KOs), 154, impressively gained the OPBF super-welter belt as well as the vacant WBO Asia Pacific title when he overpowered the current OPBF ruler Ratchasi Sithsaithong (12-5, 8 KOs), 152.75, all the way and finally decked him twice en route to a fine TKO victory at 2:51 of the eighth session on Friday in Tokyo, Japan.

Inoue, a sturdy body puncher, took the initiative with his superior power and hurt the Thailander with persistent body shots, leading on points after the fourth—40-46 twice and 39-37. Ratchasi, who had dethroned Japan’s Yutaka Oishi to win the OPBF throne via come-from-behind twelfth-round TKO last April, was durable enough to withstand Inoue’s continual assault. Finally, however, did Inoue catch up with him with merciless body bombardments, dropping him twice to score a well-received stoppage.

By Ray Wheatley — World of Boxing

WBO welterweight champion Jeff Horn is confident he will score an upset victory over the WBO welterweight mandatory contender Terrance Crawford when they clash in 2018, just like he did when he defeated ring legend Manny Pacquiao last July. “I’m very keen to fight Terence Crawford,” Horn told Fox Sports. “They’ve made him the top contender for my title and he has a great record, but I know I can beat him like I beat Pacquiao. Parker rejects ‘most insulting offer in boxing history’

By Ray Wheatley — World of Boxing

A heavyweight unification fight between IBF, WBA world champion Anthony Joshua and WBO champion Joseph Parker doesn’t look like it’s happening anytime soon after Joshua promoter Eddie Hearn’s offer was rejected by Parker’s promoter David Higgins.

“He made the most ridiculously low offer. It could have been the most insulting offer in boxing history,” Higgins told Sky Sports. “To expect 40 percent is actually quite reasonable, because you have earned it, and it’s a unification. Of course, I have mentioned it (to Joseph Parker) and he just laughed like I did.

“I’m not going to reply, because I don’t think it was Eddie Hearn. I reckon someone hacked his account, it was a scam. I reckon Eddie respects boxing and I reckon Anthony Joshua wouldn’t want to insult Joseph Parker. Continue reading “Parker rejects ‘most insulting offer in boxing history’”
