Mosley-Alvarez Conference Call Quick Quotes

By Andreas Hale

Canelo: Many people say i’m the favorite but I can’t underestimate a fighter like him. I’m going to be very weary and smart in the fight. I’m looking forward to fighting the best Shane Mosley has to offer….My mentality is to go in there, perform and win but not look for the knockout. When you go for that other obstacles come up and you may not get what you want.

Mosley: It’s about pride. All of the victories were in the past. This is a young champion I’m fighting. He has a belt that I want. We both have our ideas of what we want to do. I want to win the fight and go on to bigger and better things….I see myself not as an old warrior but a young killer. I don’t buy into the 40-year-old thing.

Southern California Fight Scene

By Francisco Salazar

News and notes about events taking place in Southern California and the fighters that call it their home.

Roy Englebrecht Promotions returns to the Hangar at the OC Fair and Events Center in Costa Mesa with a six-bout “Fight Club OC” card. Originally, the main event consisted of former two-time world title holder Steve Forbes taking on the charismatic Emanuel Augustus in an eight round bout. However, Augustus was not allowed to fight because he failed one of the required medical exams issued by the state of California on Wednesday morning.

The semi-main event moves to main event status as Kevin Hoskins and Ramon Valadez meet in a battle of top Southern California junior lightweights. Last week, I mentioned that this fight could possible steal the show as Hoskins (6-0, 4 KOs) and Valadez (10-1, 5 KOs) have fan-friendly styles and this six-round bout should be explosive. (more…)

Rios-Abril feud heats up at presser

Story by Andreas Hale

Richard Abril wanted it, stirred up some controversy for it and he finally got it. What everyone wants to know is if he is prepared to deal with what he asked for. On Saturday, Abril will be taking a major step up in competition when he faces Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios for the vacant WBA lightweight title at the Mandalay Bay Events Center on a Pay Per View card also featuring Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Sergey Fedchenko.

Abril is stepping in for Yuriorkis Gamboa, who inexplicably backed out of the fight after missing two press conferences. With “Bam Bam” making his final campaign at 135 lbs, Abril figured that he’d slide in and give the undefeated Mexican-American a challenge. However, the manner in which the challenge was handled has incited Rios.

A well documented shouting and shoving match took place when Abril — who Rios had no idea whether he was a fighter or a random person — challenged Rios when Gamboa no-showed the presser in Miami last month. Never one to let things die, the annoyed Rios wouldn’t forget what transpired when they met again for another press conference this past Saturday in Los Angeles. Another shouting and shoving match ensued and the tensions have officially heightened to the point where the two were no allowed to pose together for photos at Wednesday’s final press conference. McCloskey to face Corley now

Paul McCloskey will now face DeMarcus Corley on May 5 at the King’s Hall in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The former WBO light welterweight World champion replaces Julio Diaz as Dudey’s opponent after the Mexican raised concerns about making the 140-pound weight limit. WBC #15 Corley won his world title in 2001 with a first round stoppage of Felix Flores and made two successful defences against Ener Julio and Randall Bailey before dropping a split decision to Zab Judah in July 2003. Corley proved he still has plenty to offer as he claimed the NABF light welterweight title against previously unbeaten New Yorker Gabriel Bracero in the Big Apple in January.

“Chop Chop is a former world champion and is coming off a great comeback win against an undefeated fighter,” said DiBella. “He is eager to take a shot at McCloskey. If McCloskey were to defeat DeMarcus though, and after Ajose Olusegun wins the title from Danny Garcia, an Olusegun-McCloskey match-up would certainly be very attractive for all fight fans, particularly those in the U.K. and Ireland.”

Danny Hernandez returns to the ring

Nearly two years has passed since unbeaten lightweight Danny “El Travieso” Hernandez (10-0, 6 KOs) cheated death by surviving a stray bullet wound to his head. The incident occurred at a party when bullets fired were intended for someone else but instead hit him. Hernandez was left for dead at an inoperative medical clinic. After a seven hour brain surgery the prognosis was grim. Doctors informed his parents that Daniel would suffer partial paralysis and the inability to hear or speak.

Fast forward three weeks and miraculously the fighter walked out of the hospital on his own two feet. His determination and desire set the pace for his fast recovery as well as the pace for quick return to the ring. In what will be his first fight since January of 2010, Hernandez will be put to the test as he faces off against Mexico’s Jorge Resendiz (5-2, 4 KOs) in a 6-round lightweight bout at Foro Polanco in Mexico City.

American heavyweights in spotlight April 28

In what promises to be one of the most eagerly anticipated American heavyweight matchups of the year, undefeated Seth “Mayhem” Mitchell (24-0-1, 18 KOs) looks to continue his meteoric rise up the heavyweight ladder with a win over former top prospect Chazz “Gentleman” Witherspoon (30-2, 22 KOs) this month in Atlantic City, NJ on the undercard of the Hopkins-Dawson championship fight on April 28th. It seems like ages since boxing fans could get legitimately excited for a heavyweight fight featuring two Americans, but the exciting style of Witherspoon and Mitchell has many fans wondering if this could be the spark that reignites the heavyweight division. It was not only interesting to fans because of the styles of both fighters, but because of the background of Witherspoon and Mitchell. Mitchell, a college graduate and former linebacker for the Michigan State Spartans, has already earned a reputation for being a breath of fresh air in the division and an all around classy guy. And Witherspoon? Well, his nickname of “Gentleman” is widely seen as well-placed for the cousin of former heavyweight champ Tim Witherspoon who also is a college graduate. (more…)
