Andre Ward talks about finest moment

Report and photos by Francisco Salazar

Andre Ward may not be the fastest or the strongest fighter today. He may not be mobbed by thousands, even hundreds of boxing fans if he were to enter into an arena. In the ring, he just gets things done and has been doing so against some of the best fighters in the super middleweight division. Even against fighters numerous boxing experts and writers (including myself) predicted he would lose to. Ward gets things done. Nothing flashy. No highlight-reel endings. Just outthink and outbox his opponents.

Now that he has 25 almost one-sided victories in his pocket throughout his professional career, world title belts, and a shiny Super Six: World Boxing Classic trophy to boot, one would think that Andre Ward expected to be where he currently sits: At or near the top of the 168-pound division. Liakhovich aims to win over Philly fans in his bout with local favorite Chambers

Former WBO heavyweight champion Sergei “White Wolf” Liakhovich takes on top heavyweight contender “Fast” Eddie Chambers to open the new NBC Sports Network’s Fight Night on January 21 at Asylum Arena in Philadelphia. Commenting about fighting in his opponent’s backyard, Liakhovich said, “Philadelphia has so much boxing history and true boxing fans. I grew up in a working class city [in his native Belarus], so this feels like going home to me. One of the biggest compliments you can have as a fighter is when you can turn a crowd that comes to support the home town guy into your own fans by the end of the fight. It happened in Pittsburgh when I fought Brewster and I think it will happen again in Philly.”

Caballero meets Hosono tomorrow

By Joe Koizumi

Elongated Panamanian Celestino Caballero (35-4, 23 KOs) will defend his WBA featherweight belt against Japanese banger Satoshi “Bazooka”Hosono (21-1, 15 KOs) in the first of a twinbill tomorrow (Saturday) inYokohama, Japan. Having watched Caballero training, we wondered why this exceptionally tall champ at 5’11” would be able to make a featherweight limit of 126 pounds. But we actually saw him pass the weigh-in at 125.25, while Hosono at the 126-pound class limit. The 35-year-old Panamanian looked simply skinny and slim enough to make the weight, but his 74” reach may be a great nuisance for Hosono, who is four inches shorter and his reach is also less advantageous by some eight inches. Animosity erupts between SES Boxing light heavyweights

Photos: SES Boxing

An internal civil war inside the stable of Magdeburg, Germany-based promoter SES Boxing came to a head during a sparring session between light heavyweight contenders Robin Krasniqi and Denis Simcic. The animosity was evident Thursday evening as both fighters emerged with minor wounds. The normal peace within the camp was put aside because both Krasniqi and Simcic smelled a chance at the WBO world title.

Promoter Ulf Steinforth confirms, “We already had some talks about fighting the current WBO world champion Nathan Cleverly from Great Britain and both would want this fight. Robin Krasniqi is rated #6 while Denis Simcic is at #11, so both of them would qualify for the shot at the title. On January 7 we will see who of them is the leading the way.” (more…)

To Felix Sturm: I want a rematch

After recently hearing that Felix has announced the date of his next fight (April 13th) in Germany, I would like to make it known that I have still not heard anything of a rematch. I don’t know whether their team have discussed opponents but I am here Felix – ready and waiting. Felix has been a great champion, but both me and him know that night in Mannheim he did not beat me. Felix cannot beat me. He knows I am the better fighter and so I am not expecting him to offer me a rematch. You offered Randy Griffin one and the same to Matthew Macklin, so you have proved that you try and correct close fights (or losses) but I don’t think that the Sturm team are confident that you can win this one and as a result they and you will avoid me. Sulaiman comments on woman beating quotes

WBC President José Sulaimán has given his explanation of some widely reported, highly controversial quotes. Speaking to philboxing on the WBC’s position regarding WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather’s current legal situation, he stated “beating a lady is highly critical, (but) it is not a major sin or crime.”

Official Statement: “I would like to clarify my feelings about some recent comments of mine, and apologize for not finding the right words in English – there are many times when I cannot find the right words to express what I really mean. The comments attributed to me are a complete misrepresentation of my true feelings.

“I am a devoted husband and father of two daughters, and have three wonderful granddaughters, as well. The Virgin of Guadalupe is my superior saint. I am the person that developed female boxing, and I am the person in the WBC that has always been concerned with the protection of women in the ring. I have always been a strong supporter of women’s rights and the protection of women in society. Those are the facts – everybody knows me.

“In my comments, I just meant to say that I have always been in the corner of all the boxers of the world. They are my greatest heroes and, good or bad, I will always be in their corner.

“I know Floyd Mayweather personally, and I know that he’s a good person. I know that he accepted a plea deal for a serious offense, and I did not intend to make light of that. The judge sentenced him to 90 days, which I think is fair. But I know that Floyd is a good human being with a good heart, and I am confident that he will redeem himself with his actions in the future.

Unbeaten super middleweight champion Andre “S.O.G.” Ward and promoter Dan Goossen met with the media on Wednesday afternoon at Sisley’s Italian Kitchen in Sherman Oaks, CA. Ward defeated Carl Froch on December 16th at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ to win the Super Six World Boxing Classic tournament.

Dan Goossen: “I have promoted many great fighters throughout the years. There is no other man that I have gone into the ring has had the confidence of achieving his goals as Andre Ward. He is a throwback fighter to the golden era. He has only achieved a fraction of what I believe is ahead of him.”

Andre Ward: “I work hard and I have a tremendous work ethic. However, my whole team has a tremendous work ethic. I feel that the best is yet to come for me. I’m only 27 and I feel that I’m approaching the prime of my career. I’m not a pound-for-pound fighter yet, but I feel that I’m creeping up that list.”

DiBella explains change of heart on promoting Jermain Taylor

By Karl Freitag

Two years ago, after former middleweight champion Jermain Taylor’s Super Six loss to Arthur Abraham, promoter Lou DiBella announced that he would no longer promote Jermain Taylor stating “It is my belief that the continuation of Jermain’s career as an active fighter places him at unnecessary risk. While he is undoubtedly capable of prevailing in future bouts, I cannot, in conscience, remain involved given my assessment of such risk.”

Recently DiBella and Taylor reunited and Jermain will return to the ring for the first time in over two years Friday night on SHOWTIME. Today he explained what prompted him to change his mind about promoting the former champion.

“He had a fight in Germany that didn’t end the way we would have liked and which provided a wake-up call. He walked out of that arena with a headache, he didn’t feel great, he had to go to the hospital and spent most of the night there. It caused a reevaluation of where everything stood in his career at that moment in time. I made a decision at that moment to walk away and I’m very happy that he made a decision shortly thereafter to take some time off.” (more…)
