Escalante back in action

Popular and proud Texan Antonio Escalante returns to the ring this Saturday night at the Illusions Theater at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas to compete in the eight-round “Sólo Boxeo Tecate” co-main event on TeleFutura against Mexican knockout artist Leonilo Miranda. The explosive featherweight battle will lead up to Saturday’s main event rematch between Lubbock’s Brian Vera and former World Champion Sergio “The Latin Snake” Mora for the vacant NABO middleweight title.

Vera vs. Mora II, a 12-round fight for the vacant NABO middleweight title set for Saturday, August 11 at the Illusions Theater at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and Leija & Battah Promotions and sponsored by Cerveza Tecate. Holyfield-Mercer II (exhibition match)

18 years ago Ray Mercer and Evander Holyfield fought in a 10-round war in which Holyfield won a unanimous decision. On February 2, 2013, in South Africa, the two former world champions will once again step between the ropes of the squared circle and go to battle in a four round exhibition match. The rematch is part of The Nelson Mandela Boxing Tribute night. The 51-year-old Mercer (36-7, 26 KO) hasn’t fought since 2008 and the 49-year-old Holyfield (44-10, 29 KOs) hasn’t fought since May of last year.

Chaves to defend against Miranda?

A source has informed Fightnews.com that almost certainly Argentinian WBA interim welterweight titleholder Diego Chavez (21-0, 17 KOs) will make his first defense against Panamanian challenger Jose Miranda (12-11-3, 8 KOs) on September 22 at Luna Park in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Initially it was announced that Chaves would defend against another Panamanian boxer, Alberto Mosquera but the Mosquera camp declined the world title opportunity.

PR Best announces upcoming fights

Former world champions Roman Rocky Martinez and Ivan Iron Boy Calderon will fight for world titles on September and October, respectively, and world ranked Jonathan Polvo Oquendo is back on October in Puerto Rico.

Peter Rivera, Vice-President of PR Best Boxing Promotions, announced today that Martinez (25-1-1, 16 KOs), a former WBO junior lightweight champion, is going to fight against Mexican Miguel Beltran Jr. (27-1, 17 KOs) on September 15, as part of the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs Sergio Martinez show at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas. The fight between Rocky Martinez and Beltran Jr. is for the vacant WBO junior lightweight championship on September 15 in the Pay Per View of Chavez Jr.-Martinez, Rivera said about the title that was vacated weeks ago when former champion Adrien Broner failed to make the weight for his fight against Vicente Escobedo.

Meanwhile, Iron Boy Calderon (35-2-1, 6 KOs) and the WBO minimumweight champion Moises Fuentes (15-1, 7 KOs) will fight on October 6 in the show where Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (21-2-1, 18 KOs) and Rafael Marquez (41-7, 37 KOs) will face for the WBO International superbantamweight title at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. On that show, Oquendo (22-2, 15 KOs), the #2 ranked by the WBO in the superbantamweights, will fight for the first time in a year after his recovery from an accident. He will face an opponent to be announced.

As the younger brother of legendary and future Hall of Famer Erik “El Terrible” Morales and former World Champion Diego “Pelucho” Morales, unbeaten junior bantamweight prospect Ivan Morales (17-0, 12 KOs) has some of the best bloodlines in the sport. Olympics: USA women win one, lose one

The final two U.S. competitors in Olympic boxing took the ring on Wednesday and it was a split decision for the pair. Flyweight Marlen Esparza (Houston, Texas) lost a 10-8 bout to reigning World Champion Cancan Ren of China while Claressa Shields (Flint, Mich.) won a dominant 29-15 victory over Kazakhstan’s Marina Volnova. Esparza will leave London with a bronze medal but Shields will vie for gold on Thursday.

Mexican Boxing Tournament Returns

The second edition of the “Quien Pinta para la Corona?” tournament will return with the collaboration of Promociones del Pueblo, the WBC and AAA with support of Grupo Modelo and Comex. “We are ready to start this great boxing tour around Mexico to find new boxing prospects and future champions,” said Promociones del Pueblo President Oswaldo Kuchle. “In 2011 we had 350,000 boxing fans visit the events with their families and this is great. WealthTV lines up more boxing dates

WealthTV announced today that it has secured the live US television rights for twelve professional boxing events scheduled for 2012 and 2013 from Hennessy Sports and GYM Promotions. WealthTV will air six live shows from GYM Promotions on select Friday nights, and an additional six live dates with UK-based Hennessy Sports on select Saturday afternoons.

Top-Five pound for pound fighter and four-division world champion Nonito Filipino Flash Donaire (29-1, 18 KOs) will risk his junior featherweight world title against fellow super bantamweight champion Toshiaki Nishioka (39-4-3, 24 KOs) and former world lightweight champion Brandon Bam Bam Rios (30-0-1, 21 KOs) will take on #1 contender Mile High Mike Alvarado (33-0, 23 KOs) in a spectacular Top Rank-promoted doubleheader on October 13 under the stars at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. Both fights will be televised Live on HBO Boxing After Dark.

Unbeaten German heavyweight hope Francesco Pianeta (26-0-1, 14 KOs) will meet “The White Buffalo” Francois Botha (48-7-3, 29 Kos) on September 7 at the RWE-Halle in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany. This bout was originally scheduled to take place in May, but Botha was injured shortly before the fight and Pianeta instead fought former heavyweight champion Oliver McCall.

In June, Pianeta spent some time in the Kitzbühel, Austria, training camp of Wladimir Klitschko. “After a week’s sparring with Wladimir Klitschko I know that I can compete at the top,” stated the WBO #13 Pianeta. (more…)

Viewership rises for UFC on FOX

The UFC on FOX event broadcast on Saturday, Aug. 4, averaged a 1.4/3 household rating/share, and 2.44 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research. Despite immense Olympic competition, the UFC event posted a slightly higher audience (2.44 million vs. 2.42 million), and came within one tenth of a point in rating (1.4 vs. 1.5), compared to the last UFC on FOX event on May 5. Men 18-34, the key male demographic category for UFC programming, posted a significant +19% increase over May’s card (1.9 vs. 1.6), and for the week in prime time, the UFC on FOX event ranked #9 among Men 18-34 and was the highest-rated non-Olympic program in this category. Spence loses again, no medals for USA Boxing

USA Olympic welterweight Errol Spence didn’t take advantage of his second chance, losing a 16-11 decision to Russian Andrey Zamkovoy in the men’s boxing Olympic quarterfinals on Tuesday night. Spence lost his previous fight in the ring, but that decision was overturned after a protest. In total, after four straight wins American boxers left the ring as losers in ten straight bouts assuring the worst performance ever and only medal shutout in history for the once proud boxing nation that has won more Olympic boxing medals overall than any other country. The only bright spot is two USA female boxers, Marlen Esparza and Claressa Shields, who are assured of claiming medals in the newly added women’s division.

Boxing Back In Downtown Detroit

Famed Kronk trainer Emanuel Steward will put on his promoter hat as he along with Olympia Entertainment will present “Kronk: The New Generation” at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, MI on Saturday, August 25th. Headlining the card announced at a press conference will be a return match between fast rising Kronk star Tony Harrison and Calvin Odom. Although Harrison won their initial meeting on July 27 by a wide margin on the judges cards, the fight was by far his toughest test as he was forced to go the distance for the first time and was visibly rocked by Odom in one of the later rounds. “He [Calvin Odom] took me to a whole different level” Harrison stated and added that this time though “I’m going to give Detroit a knockout.” (more…)
