Juanma faces suspension until September 2013

By Rey Colón -The Sport Press

The postfight claim of Juan Manuel Lopez labeling referee Roberto Ramirez as a ‘gambler’ could keep Juanma out of the ring until September 2013. According to reports, the Puerto Rico Boxing Commission’s official examiner Alberto Arroyo is recommending a one year suspension, a $10,000 fine, 100 hours of community service at a location to be designated by the Commission and a course in impulse control. Lopez was automatically suspended for 90 days by the Boxing Commission’s Medical Commission following his knockout loss on March 10 to Orlando Salido and doctors allegedly decided to increase the ‘rest’ for another 90 days to expire on September 10. The one-year suspension would begin on September 10 and last until that date in 2013. Lopez may appeal these sanctions to the Secretary of the Department of Recreation and Sports Henry Neumann, who is enjoying a short holiday taking advantage of the approach of Easter,or if he is opposed to doing an appeal there is the option to go to court. Arroyo confirmed on Friday that his recommendations have been submitted to Commission president Dommys Delgado Berty.

Joyi retains IBF minimumweight belt

By Ron Jackson

IBF minimumweight champion Nkosinathi Joyi of South Africa was off form and struggled to retain his belt over 12 tough rounds against Japan’s Katsunari Takayama at the Orient Theatre in East London on Friday night. Referee Larry Doggette from the United States had an easy nights work as the judges Sylvia Mokaila (SA), Shafeeq Rashada (US) and Marco McDonnell (UK) scored it 116-111, 116-111 and 117-10 in favour of the champion. A capacity crowd saw Joyi (22-0-1nc, 15 KOs) a rather subdued champion fighting from the southpaw stance against the ever advancing Takayama (24-5-1nc,10 KOs) and many ringsiders were of the opinion that the decision could have gone in favour of the challenger.

On the undercard South African featherweight champion Sabelo Jubatha won on a unanimous 12 round points decision over Wonga Ntoyakhe to retain his title. Jubatha improves his record to 14-1, 10 KOs and Ntoyakhe saw his reported record drop to 5-6, 1 KO.Jubatha won on a majority decision

Other results: Junior bantamweight: Zolani Tete, w tko 1, Siphiwo Ntsangani; Junior featherweight: Makazole Tete, w ko 1, Unathhi Cecane.

Lundy tops Williams; Ayala beats Mitchell

Ringside Report by Scott Ploof
Photo: Emily Harney

Philadelphia native “Hammerin” Hank Lundy (22-1-1, 11 KOs) is still the NABF lightweight title holder after he defeated St. Louis’ Dannie Williams (21-2, 17 KOs) on Friday night at the MGM Grand Arena at Foxwoods in Mashantucket, CT on ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights. Scores of the bout for Lundy were 97-92 twice and 98-91. Lundy was hit in the first with a left hook from Williams that caused him to put his glove to the canvas. Referee Danny Schiavone gave Lundy the standing eight count and he recovered to end the round. In round three, both fighters had every fan in the arena on their feet as Lundy and Williams would not back down and stunned each other several times that round as neither gave up. Williams continuously had Lundy where he wanted him early on as he had Lundy’s back against the ropes. It allowed Williams to tee off on Lundy several times during the bout. By round seven it was Lundy that had Williams against the ropes as both battled trading hooks and body shots. Lundy began boxing more as he used his jab, changed up his approach, and now had Williams confused in round eight. Lundy boxed Williams well in the final two rounds of the bout as he slipped away from his opponents attack and landed his jab effectively. Lundy almost put Williams away in the final round as his opponent almost hit the canvas as the final bell rang. The seven bout fight card was promoted by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports.
—–
Former world title challenger and New Haven, Connecticut’s Elvin Ayala (25-5-1, 11 KOs) scored an eight round unanimous decision over Eric Mitchell (23-9-1, 11 KOs) in the co-feature bout of the evening. Scores of the bout were 79-73 twice and 78 -74. Mitchell, who took the fight on three days notice fought well early but it was apparent that after the second round, he was fatigued. Ayala took advantage and went after the 42 year old Mitchell throughout. To his credit Mitchell fought an excellent fight on short notice and as the fight wore on, he took his time to gather himself to stay in the fight. Both fighters continued to pace themselves while Mitchell took the fight to Ayala as well in the later rounds. Both Ayala and Mitchell stood toe to toe in the final round in what was a better than expected fight. Ayala almost put Mitchell away late but Mitchell barely survived for the final bell. (more…)

Soszyński, Saunders at 174 pounds

Photo: Przemek Garczarczyk

By Przemek Garczarczyk

Grzegorz Soszyński (20-1, 10 KO) and Rayco Saunders (22-14, 9 KO) had no problem making weight for their vacant IBF North America light heavyweight title fight this Saturday at “The Club” in Chicago. They had exactly the same weight – 174 pounds – and both are very confident about their chances.

“I’m not impressed with Soszyński’s record because I fought much tougher opposition,” said Saunders. “I have more experience and more determination and it will be clearly visible in the ring.”

“Nobody cares what Rayco wants to say now. He does not know me, he does not know where I’m coming from. I’m ready for 12 hard fought rounds. My girlfriend surprised me, arriving today from Poland and nobody want to lose in front of their loved ones,” said Soszyński.

Williams Is All Business

By Brian Grammer
Photo: Bob Barton/Rumble Time Promotions

“We got this fight for one reason….to take Hank Lundy’s title!” said “Dangerous” Dannie Williams. “All this trash talk, it’s all him. It’s not personal for me, just business. He’s making it personal.” Williams (21-1, 17 KOs) dukes it out with NABF lightweight champion “Hammerin’” Hank Lundy (21-1-1, 11 KOs) in the main event on tonight’s ESPN2 Friday Night Fights. All business is the attitude that Williams has had since moving from his home in St. Louis, MO to Youngstown, OH several years ago to work in the South Side Boxing Club with world class trainer Jack Loew. Steve Smith of Rumble Time Promotions, the promoter of Williams, asked Dannie to make the move to Youngstown to further his career. (more…)

Southern California Fight Scene

By Francisco Salazar

Not long ago, Kelly Pavlik stood on top of the not only the middleweight division, but on top of the boxing world. He was unbeaten, held multiple world titles, and had the backing of a prominent manager and a major promoter in boxing (Top Rank). While Top Rank and Cameron Dunkin are still promoting and managing him respectively, Pavlik no longer had world title belts around his belt and lost unanimous decisions to Bernard Hopkins and Sergio Martinez. While Pavlik has never been one to back down from a fight, he has to battle major battles in recent years. No, they were not against Hopkins, Martinez, or Jermain Taylor, but personal problems outside of the ring.

Alcohol problems and a recent arrest had the media putting the spotlight more on what Pavlik did outside of the ring than on his accomplishments inside of it. That did not stop Pavlik from breaking away from trainer Jack Loew, travel 2,500 miles from his hometown of Youngstown, OH to Oxnard, CA to work with trainer Robert Garcia. With Garcia in his corner and knowing that it is now or never, Pavlik will embark on a new chapter in his career, one that he hopes will return him to prominence. (more…)
