Malignaggi outpoints Diaz

John Booz

John Booz

By Jacob Chavez and Jason Ford at ringside

Junior welterweight Paulie Malignaggi (27-3, 5 KOs) gained revenge against Juan Diaz (35-3, 17 KOs), taking a twelve round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago. All three judges scored it 116-111. Malignaggi was erroneously credited with a knockdown in round ten by referee Gino Rodriguez. Diaz had won a controversial decision over Malignaggi in August.

Welterweight Victor Ortiz (25-2-1, 20 KOs) returned from his loss to Marcos Maidana with a seventh round TKO over veteran Antonio Diaz (45-6-1, 27 KOs). Ortiz dropped Diaz in round three and the bout ended between rounds six and seven when Diaz could not continue due to a bad cut over his left eye. (more…)

WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (39-2, 37 KOs) scored a one-sided twelve round unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Kevin Johnson (22-1-1, 9 KOs) on Saturday night at the PostFinance Arena in Bern, Switzerland. Vitali pressed the action and threw most of the power punches, but had trouble catching the crafty Johnson cleanly. Johnson was essentially a one-armed fighter as he relied almost exclusively on his jab. Klitschko became more dominant as the bout progressed, with the late rounds going all Vitali’s way. Scores were 120-108, 120-108, 119-109. Johnson became only the second fighter to go the full twelve with Vitali, the other being Timo Hoffmann. For more results and photos galore, click here…

Gonzales Remains Flawless

By Travis Landon

Sacramento super middleweight prospect Brandon “Flawless” Gonzales (9-0, 8 KOs) remained undefeated by defeating the usually durable Victor Villereal (8-5-2, 4 KOs) by TKO in the fourth round on Friday night at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nevada. Gonzales worked behind a sharp jab and floored Villereal in the first round. Gonzales was cut by an accidental headbutt in the second round, however continued throwing sharp combinations. In the fourth round Gonzales floored Villereal again, then in the final minute of the round hurt Villereal against the ropes and the referee stopped the fight at 2:55.

Local favorite Derek Hinkey (8-2, 7 KOs) dropped a six round split decision to 20-year-old Paul Mendez (3-1, 0 KOs), the scores were 57-56, 58-56 for Mendez and 57-56 for Hinkey in what was the fight of the night.

Tucker out hustles Armenta

By Kurt Wolfheimer and Gary “Digital” Williams at ringside

On a frigid Friday night on December 11th in Westminster, Maryland, over two thousand fans braved the sub freezing temperatures outside to enter the Agricultural Center and root their local USBO light heavyweight champion Mark “TNT” Tucker onto a potential victory against George “El Gallo” Armenta in the ten round main event of the evening. There were a few tense moments in this grueling bout, but in the end Tucker (13-0, 7 KOs) was able to box his way to a very close unanimous decision victory over Armenta (13-5, 11 KOs) by scores of 96-94 x 2 and 98-92 respectively to retain the USBO light heavyweight title. In the co-feature of the evening, Jamar “Da Truth” Freeman of Eldersburg, Maryland settled a local super middleweight trilogy with a one sided six round unanimous decision victory over Silver Springs, Maryland’s Omar Sims by scores of 60-54 and 59-55 twice. Hatton to return in 2010?

By Ray Wheatley — World of Boxing

Former world champion Ricky Hatton was interviewed on the Fenech Fight Night Foxtel televised boxing promotion at the Roundhouse – University of NSW, Sydney, NSW, Australia. “The manner in which I ended my defeat (to Pacquiao) is not really the way I would like to bow out,” Hatton said. “I’d like to bow out like Kostya did in an absolute war of a fight, a wonderful fight with great sportsmanship. I would be surprised if Kostya made a comeback. He is around the 40 mark now and he doesn’t need to (come back). (more…)

Pascal shows guts in tough victory

By Dave Spencer / Fightnews Canada

Promoter Yvon Michel called it one of the most courageous efforts he had seen in boxing. Sitting next to Jean Pascal who had both shoulders taped and slung up as beneath his robe, still in discomfort from the evenings proceedings “It was a tough fight, Adrian gave me a good fight; he’s a tough boxer and a tough fighter and a big puncher, but I’m a champion and I wanted to finish as a champion that’s why I gave it my all.” Pascal’s corner was forced to pop the fighter’s right shoulder back into place a total of three times, operating like an F-1 pit crew getting all the mechanics into place before he hit the canvas at break-neck speed. Retirement Next For Maskaev?

By David Robinett

Before his scheduled 10-round heavyweight fight Friday night against young up-and-comer Nagy Aguilera, 40-year old Oleg Maskaev acknowledged the possibility that the next fight could be his last as he continued to press forward through the twilight of a 16-year professional boxing career. “I will see in the ring if I’m going to get hurt,” explained Maskaev. “If I’m not going to be able to do what I used to do, if I’m going to lose every time then it means Oleg has to retire.” Those words may turn out to be prophetic as Maskaev, with his family watching at ringside, suffered a shocking technical knockout at 1:54 of the first round at the hands of Aguilera at the Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento, California. Diaconu: I did not lose this fight

By Dave Spencer / Fightnews Canada

Bruised and swollen, Adrian Diaconu had little to say after his loss to Jean Pascal, other than he thought he had won the fight. Diaconu spat out his mouthpiece and ran across the ring with his arm raised as the fight ended, only to have the scorecards tell another story. American judges Richard Flaherty and Julie Lederman both saw Pascal winning the fight by scores of 118-110 and 117-111 while Claude Paquette of Montreal thought the same and ruled 117-111 for Pascal.

“My feeling is that in my soul, I did not lose this fight,” said Diaconu afterwards, still trying to piece together what happened. “My feeling is that I won about eight rounds, something like that. I won this fight, to me there’s something fishy, I really don’t want to talk about it. I’ve boxed for twenty years and this is my feeling.” (more…)

Ortiz returns tonight

By Francisco Salazar

On the night that Victor Ortiz lost to hard-hitting Marcos Maidana, fight fans and boxing insiders claimed that Ortiz was not the same fighter as they had seen in previous fights. Gone was the aggressive, action fighter with the killer instinct to put fighters away, like he had done against Jeffrey Resto and Mike Arnaoutis. Instead, in the ring on that warm June night at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles was a fighter who was not sure where he was after getting knocked down twice in that 12 round bout. (more…)

Aguilera destroys Maskaev

By David Robinett at ringside

Young Dominican heavyweight Nagy Aguilera may have ended the career of former WBC heavyweight champion Oleg Maskaev, (36-7, 27 KOs), scoring a first-round stoppage before Maskaev could even land a punch. Aguilera, (15-2, 10 KOs), dropped Maskaev early with a flurry of unanswered punches, then finished off a wobbly Maskaev with a big left hook that crumpled the Russian into the corner and forced referee Lou Moret to call it off at 1:54 of round one. The loss will certainly torpedo the WBC #2 Maskaev’s already planned world title eliminator against Ray Austin. (more…)

This is the second defense for Pascal who utilized his speed and ring movement and bravely fought the last two rounds with one arm as he returned to his corner after the tenth round grimacing in pain with a separated shoulder. In fact his corner was forced to pop the shoulder back into place a total of three times on the night, the first time coming at the end of the third round. (more…)

Diary entry Friday, Dec. 11

“It’s one day before the fight and every thing is lining up exactly the way that I thought it would.  The Klitschko brothers are up to their old tricks.  Over the last few days, I’ve done a lot of media and at each event one of the Klitschko brothers has tried to get under my skin.

“At the open public workout on Thursday, I stole the show.  I had a mob of people asking me for autographs and pictures everywhere I went and I spent hours and hours greeting fans.  I think that made Vitali a little angry so when it was time for me to work out, he spent most of his time taunting me and trying to get me to take the bait. Haskins defeats Broadhurst

By Alexey Sukachev

British super flyweight champion Lee Haskins (20-2, 10 KOs) added the Commonwealth belt at the same weight class with a close foul-filled win over previously undefeated CW champion Don Broadhurst (11-1, 3 KOs) moments ago at Newport Leisure Centre in Newport, Wales. The fight was far from being a pretty, fan-friendly contest with both boxers using some dirty tactics. Adding more frustration around was an awkward Haskins’ stance and his Darchinyan-like style of boxing with only a light artillery to support it. Nevertheless, former amateur standout Broadhurst was never able to get on track and was beaten to the punch in later rounds by the national titlist. Scores were 117-113 and 116-113 (twice) – all in favor of Lee Haskins.
—–
Also, young heavyweight kayo artist David Price (4-0, 3 KOs) has finished off Latvian Dmitrijs Basovs (3-3) with a single right uppercut in the first round. Basovs countryman Andrejs Tolstihs (3-17-1, 3 KOs) was down three times before his one-sided drubbing, induced by Tony Jeffries (5-0, 4 KOs) was stopped at 2:17 of the initial round. In another notable fight, Martin Power (21-5, 9 KOs) stopped Matthew Edmonds (10-4, 2 KOs) in five rounds of action.
