Boytsov on IBF heavyweight tourney

"My doctor hasn't given the green light"

Photo: Baering

Universum heavyweight Denis Boytsov (27-0, 22 KOs) has explained the reason he is unable to participate in the IBF’s four fighter box-off which would culminate with a new mandatory challenger for IBF world champion Wladimir Klitschko. “I’m very honored and my heart bleeds that I can’t take this challenge,” said the unbeaten heavyweight, who is rated in the top five of all sanctioning bodies. “I’m totally disappointed, since I’m a fighter. However, the reason isn’t that I have no desire to compete in such a tournament, but that the doctors still haven’t given me the green light for a 12-round fight. Coming off a hand operation, a tune-up fight will likely take place later this year as a test. If all goes positively, I’ll be ready for everything. My promoter is preparing the suitable medical documents for the IBF so that they can 100% understand the reason I can’t participate.” (more…)

Tarver’s targets heavies

Interview by David Finger
Photos by Chris Cozzone

Usually when a 41-year-old former light heavyweight champion on the heels of back to back losses announces that he’s going to make a run for the heavyweight championship, boxing insiders are less than supportive. The conventional wisdom is that the comeback will end in a humiliating defeat, or worse. And more often than not, the comeback is ignored by the networks in hope that it will go away on its own.

Such is the power of Antonio Tarver (27-6, 19 KO’s) that he has already done something magical: create a major buzz in the sport despite his age and his losses in his last two fights. . . . Click here for more

Mike Jones Teleconference Quotes

By Rick Scharmberg

Hall of Fame promoters Bob Arum and Russell Peltz hosted a teleconference on Wednesday in support of highly regarded Mike “MJ” Jones (22-0, 18KOs), who will face tough Jesus Soto-Karass (24-4-3, 16 KOs) in a televised ten round bout on the Manny Pacquiao – Antonio Margarito PPV card on November 13 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Jones is ranked in the top-5 across the board at welterweight, and is the top-rated contender in the WBA. Solis-Austin in Miami

Promoter Ahmet Öner has announced that heavyweight contenders Odlanier Solis and Ray Austin meet on December 17th at the American Airlines Arena in Miami. The winner will be mandatory challenger to WBC champion Vitali Klitschko. “Solis will give no chance to Austin and finally get his opportunity against Klitschko at the beginning of the year,” said Öner. “He had a long wait for this possibility. We’re glad that we have now, finally, have a date for the fight against Austin. Finally, Solis can prove that he’s in another league than most of these old men who are hanging around at the top at the moment.”

In the co-feature, King has unbeaten light heavyweight world champion Tavoris Cloud scheduled against TBA.

WBC welterweight silver champion Secuk Aydin, whom WBC champion Andre Berto was ordered to fight next, will also appear on the card. That fight was actually scheduled for late November but was postponed to next year because the parties could not agree financially.

“The offer we got for the fight was not simply good enough,” said Öner. “It’s also evident that Berto and his promoter Lou DiBella didn’t want to fight against Selcuk. So we agreed that both can take an interim fight and then we’ll negotiate once more at the beginning of the year.”

The event will be promoted ARENA and Don King Productions.

IBF super-middleweight mandatory contender Jesse Brinkley (35-3, 22 KOs) faces IBF champion Lucian Bute (26-0, 21 KOs) this Friday in Montreal. Brinkley’s rise to a world title shot may have never happened if it were not for the partnership he has built with Reno, NV based Let’s Get It On Promotions.

In early 2007, Brinkley was at a low point in his career. He had lost two fights on national television and his future looked bleak.
