Lujan TKOs Berrio

Two-time world title challenger Sebastian Lujan (33-5-2, 20 KOs) of Argentina stopped Jailer Berrio of Colombia (19-6, 11 KOs) in round five to win the vacant WBC Latino welterweight title. Berrio scored well early and gave Lujan trouble but never seriously hurt him. The tide turned in round four beginning with a flash knockdown scored by Lujan. Berrio beat the count easily but Lujan charged him immediately and landed a vicious left hook that put him down again. Berrio managed to beat the count and was saved by the bell. Lujan swarmed Berrio with a volume of punches at the beginning of round five and again put him down. Berrio beat the count but more of the same followed seconds later and when Berrio went down again the referee stopped the fight without a count. The bout took place at the Estadio U.T.N. in Santa Fe, Santa Fe, Argentina. The event was presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Arano Box Producciones

In the 10 round co-featured WBC Latino lightweight title bout Marcelino Nicolas Lopez (18-0, 7 KOs) of Argentina edged countryman Alberto Santillan (16-5, 5 KOs) by majority decision. The bout was closely contested with both fighters having their moments. No knockdowns were scored though both fighters had the other hurt in the bout. The official scores were 97-94 and 96-94 for Lopez. The other judge had it even at 95-95.

Andrade stops Lucas

By Dave Spencer (Fightnews Canada) at ringside

WBC #12 super middleweight contender Librado Andrade (29-3, 22 KOs) scored an eighth round TKO over comebacking former WBC super middleweight champion Eric Lucas (39-7-3, 15 KOs) on Friday night in a highly-anticipated showdown at the Pepsi Colisee in Quebec City. In a good action fight, Andrade, fighting in Canada for the fourth consecutive time, simply had too much energy and durability for Lucas, who turns 39 at midnight tonight. The face of Lucas was progressively showing the effects of the fight with cuts over both eyes and a bloody nose. The fight was waved off after round eight. With the win, Andrade somewhat eases the memory of his title fight loss to current IBF champion Lucien Bute last November in the same building. Lucas said before the fight that he would retire if he didn’t win.

Middleweight Marcus Upshaw (13-4-1, 6 KOs) upset Renen St-Juste (24-2-1, 14 KOs). Upshaw was credited with a knockdown when St. Juste turned his back on him in round four and went on to win a ten round split decision. (more…)

Briggs wants to make noise

Story by David L. Hudson

This power-punching heavyweight has won 50 professional boxing matches, including a literal last-second win over Sergei Lyakhovich to win the WBO world heavyweight title. He possesses devastating power as witnessed by his 44 stoppages, but this pugilist has shown severe stamina problems at times in part due to his asthma. He has squared off against former heavyweight champions George Foreman, Lennox Lewis, Ray Mercer and Sultan Ibragimov in a career that began in 1992 with 10 first round stoppages in his first 12 bouts. He reeled off 25 consecutive victories to begin his career before a surprising kayo loss to Darroll Wilson.

Forbes’ long road back

The last thing people heard from Jesse Forbes after he was eliminated from the third season of The Ultimate Fighter in 2006 was that he would be back. Nearly four years later, he delivered on that promise.

Of course, in mixed martial arts, four years can be an eternity, enough time to make or break a career, but Forbes, who was eliminated from TUF3’s semifinals by Josh Haynes and then halted in the first round by Matt Hamill on the show’s finale card, never wavered in his resolve, something he owes to a stubborn nature that he’s had his entire life . . . .
