IBO Cruiserweight champion Danny Green and challenger Paul Briggs were angry today that the New South Wales Sports Combat Authority have refused to allow the 35 year old Briggs to fight in Sydney under their jurisdiction for their planned 21st July bout, just two weeks before the planned bout at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. Paul Briggs (26-3, 18 KO’s) has not fought since a twelve round decision win over Rupert van Aswegan in February 2007. The official reason from chairman of the boxing authority Terry Hartmann was outlined this afternoon. He stated, “Briggs failed to provide the medical evidence that the specialist sports doctor advised the authority should be obtained for this fight and in addition the request for a couple of warm up fights first was just ignored on a number of occasions.” (more…)

Tineyi Maridzo of Zimbabwe scored a devastating third round knockout over South Africa’s Mikey Schultz to retain his WBO Africa super middleweight title at the Wembley Indoor Arena in Johannesburg on Thursday night. On November 20 last year Schultz was stopped in 86 seconds by the underdog Maridzo in a match for the interim title, and was hoping for revenge, but this was not to be as he was caught with a similar overhand right to the head in the third round that sent him crashing on to his back where he was counted out by referee Jaap van Nieuwenhuizen at 1 minute and 11 seconds into the round. IBO cruiserweight champion Danny Green’s July 21 title defense against Paul Briggs has been moved from Sydney to Perth, Australia. The bout will now take place in Challenge Stadium after NSW Combat Sports Authority refused to approve Briggs (26-3, 18 KOs), who is returning after a three-and-a-half year layoff. An outraged Green has called for an investigation.
WBO light heavyweight champion Jürgen Brähmer (36-2, 29 KOs) has completed the hard sparring phase of his training for his July 17th title defense against Spaniard Alejandro Lakatos (31-5-2, 23 KOs) in Schwerin, Germany. “Jürgen has powered through 78 rounds,” said trainer Michael Timm. “This was very good sparring. I’m excited about his attitude. But training and fighting are two different things. On July 17th, it all comes down to how he implements everything. Lakatos is difficult and experienced. But Jürgen is also…”
