One of the dreams of three time world champion Jorge “Travieso” Arce was to fight in Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, a city that has always embraced boxing and where the great Julio Cesar Chavez was born, before moving to Culiacan as a child. “Fighting in Ciudad Obregon is something that I’ve always dreamed of doing while I was a young boxer coming up. To me it’s one the best boxing towns in all of Mexico and has a great tradition of boxing. They had some very good fights here in the past including some with their native son Julio Cesar Chavez,” said Arce, today during the final press conference leading up to his fight this Saturday. WBC President Jose Sulaiman, upon hearing that the bout between Floyd Mayweather and Shane Mosley will not be for Mosley’s WBA welterweight title, has announced that the WBC will offer the WBC Diamond Belt to the Mayweather-Mosley winner and be recognized as WBC Diamond world champion, being certain that if Mayweather wins he’ll proudly accept the belt. “In history, there has been only one world champion who has won the WBC Diamond Belt, the idol of the Philippines and the world Manny Pacquiao,” said Sulaiman in a statement. “The winner of Mayweather vs. Mosley also deserves to be crowned as WBC Diamond world champion.” If the WBC is not allowed to present the belt in the ring, they will do so in the locker room of the winner.
What’s interesting about this decision is the fact that although Manny Pacquiao already holds the WBC Diamond Belt world championship at welterweight, Mayweather-Mosley will not be for an “interim” WBC Diamond Belt world championship. In essence, the WBC would be awarding the same belt and same title to another fighter in the same division as Pacman.

WBO light heavyweight world champion Jürgen Brähmer (35-2, 28 KOs) defends his title for the second time on Saturday in Hamburg against #8 rated Mariano Nicolas Plotinsky (16-3, 8 KOs). The run up to this fight has been unusual for both fighters. Plotinsky arrived three days late because of the Icelandic volcano. Brähmer’s car caught fire and burnt up on Wednesday. “It was no big deal,” explained Brähmer. “I had gone back to Schwerin to get still some clothes and my mouthpiece for Saturday. Suddenly there was a weird smell so I stopped and immediately extinguished the flames. When the fire department arrived, everything was already over. My clothes smelled like smoke, but otherwise nothing happened. My girlfriend picked me up. In the evening we went back to the hotel in Hamburg. At least now I know what I’ll do after my career. I’ll be a fireman. Everyone praised me and told me what I did was exemplary. I should given a few autographs.” For more details and photos click here…
“I’m a difficult math problem that no one can solve,” Floyd Mayweather, Jr. said today on a national teleconference. “The ultimate goal is how to solve the problem.” Calling himself the greatest fighter of all time, Mayweather said the task is beyond “Sugar” Shane Mosley, whom he will face May 1 in Las Vegas. “Shane done some things in this sport, but this fight is about enhancing my legacy, about proving I’m the best.”
Mayweather and manager Leonard Ellerbe also talked about not fighting for the WBA welterweight title. “At this level it’s not about belts,” said Ellerbe. “It’s about improving legacy and it’s about money. A title fight never entered the picture.” Stay tuned for a full report.

Promoters Tuto Zabala Jr. and Rafael Mendoza have enlisted noted boxing attorney Tony Gonzalez to enforce their exclusive promotional agreement with unbeaten welterweight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, whom they signed on September 18, 2008. On January 22, 2010, Alvarez subsequently signed a promotional agreement with Golden Boy Promotions in Guadalajara, Mexico. Alvarez is slated to make his Golden Boy debut on the May 1 Mayweather-Mosley PPV against Jose Miguel Cotto.
Zabala and Mendoza have thus far been unsuccessful in working out a co-promotional arrangement with Golden Boy, and now are looking to exercise and exhaust any and all legal remedies available to them. Gonzalez has already requested that Golden Boy cease and desist from any conduct which violates his clients’ promotional rights and informed GBP that any promotional pact they have with Alvarez constitutes tortious interference which will be met with aggressive legal action if it continues. Stay tuned.
