Jab Promotions update

By Alexey Sukachev

One cannot imagine a better year for a brand new promotional company than 2009 was for the recently created Jab Promotion boxing group, co-ruled by its president Vitaly Supichenko and former European bantamweight titlist Alexander Yagupov. The dynamic duo started their mutual partnership in the fall of 2008 and after just one year of work this St. Petersburg-based company has something to be proud of. Jab Promotion was the only Russian promoter who was able to get its fighters a big time abroad (not once but twice)… and a shot at world title as well. It would have been even bigger if Ali Ismailov and Dmitry Sukhotsky had won their WBO championships but either way they had been close enough to pull off the upsets while fighting at backyards of Victor Emilio Ramirez and Jürgen Brähmer correspondingly to create some controversy around the results. Ed Mulholland

World champion Steven Luevano has not faced a challenge in his professional career that he did not like. Being an underdog is something now that is second nature to the soft-spoken and often shy Luevano. Relishing the role of being an underdog, Luevano will once again be just that when he steps inside the ring against Juan Manuel Lopez, who is moving up in weight to challenge Luevano for his title. Rather than feel overwhelmed by that notion and of fighting in Lopez’ adopted hometown, Luevano can not wait to get inside the ring and do what he does best: win. (more…)

Mosses vs Acosta?

By Gabriel F. Cordero

Word is an agreement is close for a bout between WBA interim lightweight champion Miguel “Aguacerito” Acosta and WBA world champion Paulus Moses for the absolute WBA crown. The bout was proposed by the WBA after parties were unable to reach agreement for a bout between Acosta and Miguel Domínguez. The bout would satisfy the mandatory requirement. “We will send the information indicating that this is a mandatory fight and the managers of both boxers should arrive at an economic agreement in 30 days. If they do not close the agreement, the WBA will hold a purse bid to define the purse, the location and the date of the challenge. It will be for the absolute lightweight title,” said WBA vice-president Gilberto Mendoza Jr.

Pacquiao-Clottey Quick Quotes

NYC presser at Madison Square Garden

Marty Rosengarten/RingsidePhotos.com

By Mariano A. Agmi and Alex Dombroff

Freddie Roach: This is a tough fight for us. Joshua is a big, strong welterweight, so we have a task in front of us. We have to find his strengths and flaws and figure out how to take away his strengths and take advantage of his weaknesses.

Joshua Clottey: This is a miracle opportunity for me. To share a ring with Manny Pacquiao is something I want to do because he is the best fighter pound for pound. He beat everyone in front of him, but I promise you that we are coming to fight and we will please the people.

Manny Pacquiao: Joshua Clottey’s style is different from styles I have fought. Clottey is bigger and taller than Miguel Cotto. I thought his fight with Cotto was very close. I have to prepare and train hard for this fight because Clottey is a strong fighter and a former champion. I won’t promise that I’ll win, but I promise a good fight.

Promoter Bob Arum: Yesterday we held a press conference in Cowboys Stadium. It was truly stupendous. It will be a great event held in the greatest stadium in the world. Those making the trip to Dallas will see a boxing event like they’ve never seen before.

HBO’s Mark Taffet: We are proud to be a part of the inaugural telecast at the new Cowboys Stadium. It gives new meaning to the phrase “Everything is bigger in Texas.”

By Jeff Zimmerman

As the saying goes, everything is “Bigger in Texas,” and today’s press conference kicking off the Manny Pacquiao vs. Joshua Clottey super fight on March 13th at the new Dallas Cowboy Stadium was no exception. It’s not the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao mega fight that everyone craved, but this fight, dubbed “The Event” should still do well with pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao as the main draw. Dallas Cowboy Owner Jerry Jones, co-promoting the fight along with Top Rank Chief and Hall of Fame Promoter Bob Arum, showcased the new stadium for the large media contingent and several hundred fans in attendance, mostly pro Pacquiao. And Jones made sure his massive 160 foot long and 72 foot high HD video screen was also on full display making Pacquiao and Clottey look larger than life while highlighting some of the greatest fights in boxing history during the introductions. Mack vs Johnson is off too

Mack upset that whole card was cancelled

Photo: Talon Boxing

Light heavyweight Yusaf Mack is upset following the cancellation of the card on the 30th January, Mack has had a rough time over the last few months, first a contest with Karo Murat falling through and now the fight with Glen Johnson. “I understand why the show has been cancelled and my heart goes out to Berto and the whole country of Haiti, but I am disappointed I wasn’t given the chance to show the world the new Yusaf Mack, I have really turned my life around in the last two years with the help of my trainer John Tandy and my management team Rory Donadio and Greg Cipriano. I have won my last five fights and at last now I was given the opportunity to showcase myself in front of the world. I have been in camp since early November and I am in the best shape of my life, we have all worked really hard and I am disappointed that HBO didn’t feel the card was still strong enough to continue the show without Shane and Berto. Johnson and me would have been a classic fight, Daniel Ponce De Leon, Sergio Mora and Vivian Harris were all on the card as well which made for a great show even without Shane and Berto.” For more plus photos click here…
