Nick Giongco

By Nick Giongco

Rod Nazario, the former business manager of Manny Pacquiao, and widely recognized as the man who gave the current pound-for-pound king his break on US soil, passed away at the age of 74 on Thursday morning at the Perpetual Help Hospital in Las Pinas, Metro Manila. Nazario, who became involved in the fight game during the time of Tanny Campo in the 1950s, had been diagnosed with lung cancer last year. Nazario even celebrated his birthday last Sept. 12 and over the weekend, Pacquiao dropped by the hospital and wished him well. Pacquiao was under the tutelage of Nazario from 1995 until 2005 and it was in June 2001 when Pacquiao made his American debut after Nazario negotiated that he be given the chance to fight underneath an Oscar De La Hoya headliner at the MGM Grand. Nazario was at ringside when Pacquiao knocked out Ricky Hatton last May in Las Vegas. Fightnews would like to express its condolences to the family of Nazario.

Sosa to defend Nov. 21

By Robert Coster

Boxing’s busiest champion, WBC light-flyweight monarch Edgar Sosa (37-5, 21 KOs) is set for yet another title defense on November 21st in Tuxla Gutierrez, Chappas, Mexico, the eleventh defense of his two year tenure as champion. The opponent being mentioned is touted Filipino contender Rodel Mayol (25-4-1, 19 KOs) who just gave WBO champion Ivan Calderon two tough back-to-back battles, one a draw and the other, a recent close point loss. It is very probable that with this fight Sosa would be closing out his reign in the 108lb division and stepping up to the flyweight division next year. For his part Mayol would be making his fourth attempt at winning the mini-flyweight title, after unsuccessful attempts against Ulises Solis and Calderon. Rodel is reputed for his lightening speed and excellent power. Declared champion Sosa, “I think Mayol proved how worthy a fighter he is against a great champion like Calderon, giving Ivan the hardest fights of his career. If the fight is confirmed, I expect a very difficult challenge from Mayol.”

Roach: Pacquiao very sharp

Dennis Principe

Dennis Principe

By Dennis Principe

If Manny Pacquiao were to fight Miguel Cotto this weekend, there is no doubt in the mind of Freddie Roach the Filipino boxing sensation could still win the highly-anticipated bout. This was how Roach described Pacquiao’s conditioning as soon as the two linked up for the first time since their 2nd round demolition of Ricky Hatton last May in Las Vegas: “He was very sharp. If I didn’t know better I would think he was in the gym for a month. His combinations are fast and his power is already there. His mindset, we’re on the same page that we know how to fight Cotto,” said Roach moments after their training. (more…)

Last month two-time former lightweight world title challenger José Miguel Cotto (29-1, 21 KOs) returned to the ring for the first time in 27 months. Since then he hasn’t stopped, and with the clear purpose of regaining his well earned place in boxing, he’s facing his role as the headliner in the “Boxeo Boricua in Caguas” event that will take place in the Héctor Solá Bezares Coliseum on Saturday. “The first phase was the hardest” explained José Miguel, regarding the process of regaining his condition and fighting weight. He assured that he feels “focused and ready to win,” against whatever rival he’ll face. On Saturday, José Miguel will fight Martín Ramírez (7-11-1, 4 KOs), from Phoenix, Arizona. If Cotto comes out with a victory, probably he’d fight next in Las Vegas on the day before the “Firepower” mega event, where his younger brother (world champion Miguel Cotto) will face Manny Pacquiao.

Fenech named Aussie best

By Ray Wheatley — World of Boxing

greatest

Jeff Fenech has been named as Australia’s greatest ever boxer, just ahead of Kostya Tszyu and Lionel Rose. A new glossy magazine entitled “The Greatest” hits Australian news stands this week naming the top 50 Australian fighters of all time going back to 19th century greats such as Peter Jackson and Young Griffo. Fenech won the IBF bantamweight, WBC super-bantamweight and WBC featherweight titles and was considered desperately unlucky not to take the WBC super-featherweight title from Azumah Nelson when their 12-round war in Las Vegas in 1991 was declared a draw to almost universal condemnation. During his career Fenech beat such fighters as Nelson, Daniel Zaragoza, Carlos Zarate, Greg Richardson, Samart Payakarun, Marcos Villasana, Victor Callejas, Steve McCrory, Jerome Coffee, Mario Martinez and Satoshi Shingaki. He made a comeback aged 44 last year after a 12-year absence to outpoint Nelson over 10 rounds in Melbourne and retired with a record of 29-3-1 (21 KOs). He was undefeated on the march to his three world titles. (more…)
