IBF 130lb title vacated

The IBF Jr. Lightweight title has been vacated. Mzonke Fana, who was scheduled to defend his title against Argenis Mendez on June 11, 2011, to date has not submitted a signed contract to the IBF. Fana has failed to fulfill his contractual obligation to defend his title, which should have taken place by March 11, 2011. Fana’s failure to not comply has resulted in the IBF Jr. Lightweight title becoming vacant. Argenis Mendez will still have the opportunity to fight for the title.

Kuziemski in, Bellew out

New foe for Cleverly in 1st defense

Newly elevated WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly will now make his first defense against Aleksy Kuziemski from Poland this Saturday at the 02 Arena in London. Tony Bellew, who had stepped in this morning to replace Juergen Braehmer, has been beaten by the scales to make the pre-fight weight check today. Whilst Bellew was really up for fight, the boxer and his manager Frank Warren, felt it was too big a ask and that the boxer’s safety has to be paramount.

The unbeaten Welshman, declared World Champion by the WBO today after Braehmer was stripped, now tackles the #11 ranked Kuziemski who was considered as a challenger to Cleverly before Bellew put himself forward for the fight. From Swiece in Poland, but now based out of Hamburg, Germany, Kuziemski has a good record of 21 wins from 23 fights and is the former WBO Intercontinental/German/EBA Light-Heavyweight Champion. By Francisco Salazar
Photos: Ricardo Conde

Wednesday night was all about Victor Ortiz in Ventura, the hometown for the fighter who captured a world title belt last month. In the process, he became the first world title holder to come from the coastal city located next to Oxnard. Ortiz was presented with a key to the city at a celebratory dinner at the Watermark Restaurant and Lounge in downtown Ventura. Mayor Bill Fulton was on hand to present Ortiz with a key and a proclamation from the city for putting the city of Ventura on the boxing map.

“We’re privileged to have you here in Ventura,” said Fulton, who was appointed mayor in December of 2009. “There are few people who think that the other city (Oxnard) is the boxing capital of Ventura County. But, Victor has demonstrated that Ventura is the boxing capital of Ventura County. (more…)

Argenis Mendez Update

Photo: Craig Gibson

Coming off an impressive win against Cassius Baloyi, IBF junior lightweight title challenger Argenis Mendez is currently in the UK training for his on-off title shot against Mzonke Fana. Pictured with trainer Lee Beard (right) and gym owner Bobby Rimmer (left), Mendez has been in the UK for the last two weeks working hard at the Manchester based gym. Mzonke Fana recently pulled out of the fight citing a lack of trainer and training camp as the reason. Should the fight not go ahead, it is possible that the IBF may strip Fana of his title and give Argenis the chance to fight for the vacant title, whatever the outcome, his camp says Mendez will be ready.

Heated sparring at the Wild Card

Chavez Jr., Martirosyan blast away at Media Day

Photos: Chris Farina/Top Rank

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and Vanes Martirosyan blasted hard punches while sparring six hard rounds at the Chavez Jr Media Day on Wednesday. Chief trainer Freddie Roach announced to media “it’s time to spar.” Chavez Jr and Martirosyan fired off big punches. Chavez Jr worked on body shots. Martirosyan landed heavy punches to the jaw of Chavez Jr while his father, the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez, watched from ringside at the Wild Card Gym.

Roach, who trains both fighters at the Wild Card, said he wanted to make a point. “Junior is in top condition and ready to fight for the world title,” he said. “The same goes for Vanes. This is the best he’s looked in a long time.”

On June 4, Chavez Jr will challenge WBC Middleweight Champion Sebastian Zbik at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles. On the undercard, Martirosyan will take on Saul Roman in an eliminator bout. Zbik vs. Chavez Jr will be televised on HBO After Dark.

Quintana eyes Kirkland, Angulo

By Rey Colón -The Sport Press

Former WBO welterweight champion Carlos ‘El Indio’ Quintana could return in August or September against either Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo or James Kirkland said his trainer Jose Bonilla. “I talked to Lou DiBella and am negotiating a fight for August or September and those two were mentioned. They are strong but Quintana is at a stage that we must seek fights where there is good money. Quintana is also strong at 154. Carlos Quintana is looking for big fights for good money, not small change and to get a good win.”

Julio-Adjaho Presser

A press conference was held for Friday’s clash between Joel Julio and late sub Anges Adjaho at the Prudential Center’s AmeriHealth Pavilion in Newark, NJ, which will be broadcast on ESPN2.

Promoter Kathy Duva: “For the main event we had a great match made originally with Antwone Smith, and unfortunately Antwone was injured. Jolene (Mizzone) and Russell (Peltz) had to go out and find an opponent for Joel. After going through literally 10 people, people who wouldn’t take the fight, or people ESPN wouldn’t accept, they worked very hard and came up with Anges Adjaho. He’s a very tough fighter and ready for the challenge.”

Anges Adjaho: “I am thankful for the opportunity. Sometimes it’s hard to say exactly what I mean, but I know I am ready for this fight. People will be surprised.”

Joel Julio: “I am in very good shape. I feel very good. I have worked hard with my trainers. It does not matter that he (Smith) could not fight me, I am ready to fight anybody. I don’t want to talk too much – my hands talk for me! See you Friday night!”

Collins-Williams collide tonight

By Peter Lim

Photo: Peter Lim

A lineup of up-and-coming local fighters do battle at the latest Savarese Boxing Promotions fight night at the Houston Club on May 19 . The main event will be a six-round heavyweight bout between Steve Collins, 24-1 (17 KOs) and Rubin Williams, 29-14-1 (16 KOs). Although it might not appear that much of a mismatch on the surface, dig a little deeper and note that Williams was at his best as a 168-pound fringe contender from 2003 to 2007. He is on a 12-fight losing streak, six via stoppage, that began in January of 2008. And although the names on Williams’ record read like a who’s who roster of super middleweights that includes the likes of Andre Ward, Jeff Lacy, Allen Green, Chris Henry and Alfonso Lopez, he lost to all of them. Vazquez-Katsidis in Australia?

Two time world champion Michael Katsidis is one step closer to his dream of bringing a world title fight down under with his Manager/Trainer Brendon Smith today confirming that they have issued a challenge to Mexican world champion Miguel Vazquez. “The call was made last night to Vazquez’s people to let them know our intentions with the fight. Both camps know how good a fight this is,” Smith said.”

Vazquez is no stranger to big name fights as he won a split decision over Breidis Prescott (the only man to beat world champion Amir Khan) and more recently took the scalp of Australia’s own Lenny Zappavigna, but none of this worries Katsidis. “Kevin Mitchell also beat Breidis Prescott, and I KO’d him in three rounds,” Katsidis said. “This will be a huge fight for the Australian people, I would love nothing more than to bring a world class fighter like Vazquez to Australia. It will be great to repay the favour for beating my Aussie mate.” (more…)

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (42-0-1 ,30 KOs) will have the opportunity to fight for the WBC Middleweight Title as he takes on world champion Sebastian Zbik (30-0, 10 KOs) of Germany on June 4 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. This will be the third fight for Chavez Jr. under famed trainer Freddie Roach. The two hooked up last year in June before Chavez’ twelve round unanimous decision over John Duddy at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, followed by a ten round unanimous decision over Billy Lyell in Culiacan Sinaloa Mexico this past January.

“Against Duddy he was not a complete fighter, for the last fight we had against Lyell we only had three weeks to prepare and this time we have more time to prepare, he is much better now in terms of technique,” Roach told Fightnews.com on working with Chavez Jr. in preparation for his upcoming title bout. Pascal-Hopkins: Few Words

By Dave Spencer/Fightnews Canada

They both threw the same punch, but it was Bernard Hopkins who got off first at today’s final press conference in advance of Saturday’s rematch between The Executioner and WBC Champion Jean Pascal set for the Bell Centre in Montreal.

For all the talk leading into the fight, each combatant uttered just three words each after taking the microphone, “Enjoy the Fight.” The usually talkative Hopkins took to the stage first and after uttering death threats in previous outings, kept it short and sweet with the, “Enjoy the fight,” greeting.

Pascal who had demanded drug testing of Hopkins in their initial press conference to announce the fight was also a man of few words matched the 46 year-old fighter word for word when called upon to speak.

When fielding questions from the media, Hopkins when asked about his legacy, again stuck to the same three-word combination, “Enjoy the fight,” at which point both fighters beat a hasty retreat to the exits.
