Flores stops Campos

Photos and report by Peter Lim

Featherweight Miguel Flores remained undefeated at (9-0, 6 KOs), after stopping Rolando Campos, (2-4, 1 KO), in the fifth round but not without a few heart-stopping moments at the latest Savarese Boxing Promotions fight night at the Houston Club. Flores, 18, immediately went to work with crisp combinations to the head and body from the outset, but just when it seemed he was comfortably in control, he ducked smack into a right uppercut that had him momentarily out on his feet. He instinctively grabbed and leaned on Campos, buying enough time to shake it off, get his legs back and regain control of the fight. He returned to his corner with a cut on his left eyelid. A sharp-shooting boxer-puncher, Flores dictated the action in rounds two and three with pin-point punches he unleashed upstairs and down. Riding a two-fight winning streak, Campos, 27, was in it to win it, though. For more details and photos click here…

Green–Tarver presser

Photos and report by Craig Watt

The Australian media tour for the July 20th IBO Cruiserweight fight between Australian champion Danny Green (31-3, 27 KOs) and American Antonio Tarver (28-6, 19 KOs) landed in Perth, Western Australia today. The event at the Belmont Racing Circuit saw both boxers exhibit respect for each other yet strong confidence that each would be victorious for their forthcoming fight at the Entertainment Centre, Sydney in eight weeks time. The former four time world champion Tarver was confident of causing an upset and stated, “I think they took this fight because I was 42 and thought I was too old. Let me tell you I am no Roy Jones and I have come to Australia with only one objective in mind and that is to win the IBO Cruiserweight title. I pride myself that I was the first fighter to knock out Roy Jones and I will be the first fighter to knock out Danny Green.” For more details and photos click here…

Tapia-Archuleta III in jeopardy

The June 4 rubber match at Hard Rock of Albuquerque between Johnny Tapia and Frankie Archuleta is on the brink of cancellation. According to a confidential source at Isleta, Archuleta has refused to take an MRI ordered by the Isleta Athletic Commission. Tapia has already passed all of his exams and has been cleared to fight – but Archuleta originally did not want to spend the money for tests in case the fight fell through. After Team Tapia offered to pay for the tests and deduct it from his purse (approximately $2,000 worth of tests), Archuleta agreed and was scheduled for an exam and a referral for an MRI tomorrow. Unfortunately, Archuleta did not show up at the exam, nor did he get the referral, which means tomorrow’s MRI is an impossibility.  According to our source, it was further mentioned that Archuleta has yet to return a signed contract for the fight and a replacement has now been found for what will now be billed as Tapia’s final bout. Stay tuned.  - Chris Cozzone

Kuziemski in, Bellew out

New foe for Cleverly in 1st defense

Newly elevated WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly will now make his first defense against Aleksy Kuziemski from Poland this Saturday at the 02 Arena in London. Tony Bellew, who had stepped in this morning to replace Juergen Braehmer, has been beaten by the scales to make the pre-fight weight check today. Whilst Bellew was really up for fight, the boxer and his manager Frank Warren, felt it was too big a ask and that the boxer’s safety has to be paramount.

The unbeaten Welshman, declared World Champion by the WBO today after Braehmer was stripped, now tackles the #11 ranked Kuziemski who was considered as a challenger to Cleverly before Bellew put himself forward for the fight. From Swiece in Poland, but now based out of Hamburg, Germany, Kuziemski has a good record of 21 wins from 23 fights and is the former WBO Intercontinental/German/EBA Light-Heavyweight Champion. Wednesday night was all about Victor Ortiz in Ventura, the hometown for the fighter who captured a world title belt last month. In the process, he became the first world title holder to come from the coastal city located next to Oxnard. Ortiz was presented with a key to the city at a celebratory dinner at the Watermark Restaurant and Lounge in downtown Ventura. Mayor Bill Fulton was on hand to present Ortiz with a key and a proclamation from the city for putting the city of Ventura on the boxing map.

“We’re privileged to have you here in Ventura,” said Fulton, who was appointed mayor in December of 2009. “There are few people who think that the other city (Oxnard) is the boxing capital of Ventura County. But, Victor has demonstrated that Ventura is the boxing capital of Ventura County. (more…)

Argenis Mendez Update

Coming off an impressive win against Cassius Baloyi, IBF junior lightweight title challenger Argenis Mendez is currently in the UK training for his on-off title shot against Mzonke Fana. Pictured with trainer Lee Beard (right) and gym owner Bobby Rimmer (left), Mendez has been in the UK for the last two weeks working hard at the Manchester based gym. Mzonke Fana recently pulled out of the fight citing a lack of trainer and training camp as the reason. Should the fight not go ahead, it is possible that the IBF may strip Fana of his title and give Argenis the chance to fight for the vacant title, whatever the outcome, his camp says Mendez will be ready.

Photos: Chris Farina/Top Rank

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and Vanes Martirosyan blasted hard punches while sparring six hard rounds at the Chavez Jr Media Day on Wednesday. Chief trainer Freddie Roach announced to media “it’s time to spar.” Chavez Jr and Martirosyan fired off big punches. Chavez Jr worked on body shots. Roach, who trains both fighters at the Wild Card, said he wanted to make a point. “Junior is in top condition and ready to fight for the world title,” he said. “The same goes for Vanes. This is the best he’s looked in a long time.”

On June 4, Chavez Jr will challenge WBC Middleweight Champion Sebastian Zbik at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles. On the undercard, Martirosyan will take on Saul Roman in an eliminator bout. Zbik vs. Chavez Jr will be televised on HBO After Dark.

Julio-Adjaho Presser

A press conference was held for Friday’s clash between Joel Julio and late sub Anges Adjaho at the Prudential Center’s AmeriHealth Pavilion in Newark, NJ, which will be broadcast on ESPN2.

Promoter Kathy Duva: “For the main event we had a great match made originally with Antwone Smith, and unfortunately Antwone was injured. Jolene (Mizzone) and Russell (Peltz) had to go out and find an opponent for Joel. After going through literally 10 people, people who wouldn’t take the fight, or people ESPN wouldn’t accept, they worked very hard and came up with Anges Adjaho. He’s a very tough fighter and ready for the challenge.”

Anges Adjaho: “I am thankful for the opportunity. Sometimes it’s hard to say exactly what I mean, but I know I am ready for this fight. People will be surprised.”

Joel Julio: “I am in very good shape. I feel very good. I have worked hard with my trainers. It does not matter that he (Smith) could not fight me, I am ready to fight anybody. I don’t want to talk too much – my hands talk for me! See you Friday night!”

Collins-Williams collide tonight

By Peter Lim

Photo: Peter Lim

A lineup of up-and-coming local fighters do battle at the latest Savarese Boxing Promotions fight night at the Houston Club on May 19 . The main event will be a six-round heavyweight bout between Steve Collins, 24-1 (17 KOs) and Rubin Williams, 29-14-1 (16 KOs). Although it might not appear that much of a mismatch on the surface, dig a little deeper and note that Williams was at his best as a 168-pound fringe contender from 2003 to 2007. He is on a 12-fight losing streak, six via stoppage, that began in January of 2008. And although the names on Williams’ record read like a who’s who roster of super middleweights that includes the likes of Andre Ward, Jeff Lacy, Allen Green, Chris Henry and Alfonso Lopez, he lost to all of them.
