Abraham victorious, Ward next

Cunningham still IBF champ, Hernandez wins WBA belt

By Karl Freitag

Former world champion Arthur Abraham (32-2, 25 KOs) got back into ring with a second round TKO over against WBA #9 super middleweight Stjepan Bozic (24-5, 15 KOs) on Saturday night at the RWE Sporthalle in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany. In the 4:01 that the bout lasted, King Arthur was much busier than the fighter who faced Carl Froch in November. However the bout ended prematurely in round two when Bozic suffered an injury to his right hand and went to a knee. The fight was then stopped by referee Daniel Van de Weile. Abraham will next challenge WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward in the Super Six semi-final in May.

Cruiserweight Yoan Pablo Hernandez (24-1, 13 KOs) scored a seventh round knockout over WBA interim champion Steve Herelius (21-2-1, 12 KOs) to claim the interim belt. Herelius suffered an injury to his left leg in round four and there was a lengthy delay between rounds four and five before the bout continued. Hernandez knocked down Herelius twice in the seventh, the second time with a brutal barrage of punches. Referee Steve Smoger immediately waved it off at 1:19.

IBF cruiserweight world champion Steve Cunningham (24-2, 12 KOs) won close twelve round unanimous decision over Enad Licina (19-3, 10 KOs) to retain his belt. It was a competitive bout throughout with many close rounds, however Cunningham overcame a determined effort by Lucina to prevail by scores of 118-110, 117-111, 115-113. Fightnews.com also scored it 115-113.

Former WBO super middleweight title challenger Eduard Gutknecht (20-1, 8 KOs), now ranked WBO #11 at light heavyweight, outworked game Oleksandr Cherviak (9-2, 1 KO) over eight rounds. Scores were 78-74, 79-73, 80-72.

WBO #14 light heavyweight (Karo Murat 22-1, 13 KOs) returned from his WBO title eliminator loss in September to Nathan Cleverly to outpoint once promising Christian Cruz (12-12-1, 10 KOs) over eight rounds. Cruz has now lost 10 of his last 11 bouts.

Unbeaten middleweight Dominik Britsch (21-0, 7 KOs) easily outpointed Joe Rea (7-2-1, 4 KOs) over eight rounds.

Unbeaten heavyweight Francesco Pianeta 22-0-1, 13 KOs) won a lackluster eight round unanimous decision over Samir Kurtagic (9-2, 7 KOs).

Light heavyweight Erik Skoglund (5-0, 3 KOs) needed just 1:47 to destroy Valerijs Rogozins (1-4, 0 KOs) in the first round.

Hicks, a gusty opponent, went down from a body shot in the first. After the second knockdown, Hicks cited a broken or sprained wrist, and could not continue.

Adamek-McBride moved to April 9

Tomasz Adamek vs. Kevin McBride, originally scheduled for late April at Newark’s Prudential Center has been moved to Saturday, April 9th, it was announced today by promoters Kathy Duva of Main Events and Ziggy Rozalski of Ziggy Promotions. The cancellation of the planned April 9th PPV bout between Juan Manuel Marquez and Erik Morales, coupled with the proximity of April 23rd to Easter Sunday caused the change.

“Like Tomasz Adamek, many of the Polish fans are deeply religious and the fact that the bout was scheduled for Easter Saturday was troubling to them,” Duva explained. “We heard the fans loud and clear and, when the opportunity to move to April 9th presented itself, we decided to move to a date that is more acceptable to our fans.” (more…)

Mosquera dominates Ruiz

By Robert Coster

Junior Welterweight contender and one of Panama’s shinning new stars, WBA #3 Alberto Mosquera (16-0, 12 KOs) demonstrated his class and skills with a one-sided eleven round unanimous decision over Cristian Ruiz (15-1, 11 KOs) of Nicaragua to retain his WBA Fedelatin title in Panama City last night. The fight was much anticipated by local fans as both young boxers stepped into the ring with unblemished records. However there was only one dominant boxer in the ring and it was Mosquera who proceeded, from the very first round to attack and overwhelm his foe in all possible aspects – power, speed and ring generalship. To his credit, Ruiz was game and withstood his punishment bravely until the final bell. All three judges had no hesitation in awarding the Panamenian southpaw a lopsided 110-99 victory. “This is probably my best win. Everything worked perfectly tonight,” declared Mosquera after the bout. The card was held at the Atlapa Convention Center and promoted by Promociones y Eventos del Istmo.
