Berto shows fire

By Karl Freitag

Normally laid back former WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto bristled today when a reporter suggested that he risks becoming a forgotten fighter after losing his title to Victor Ortiz. “Is that what it is? You lose one fight you’re forgotten about? Fighters have shown for years and years they lose one fight then come back a whole lot bigger than they were before,” stated Berto. “Saying that kind of thing blows my mind about you reporters or just the sport in general sometimes. You have a kid who has a lot of hype and goes undefeated, he loses one fight, one CLOSE fight, and you act like you’re automatically gonna write him off, off one fight? (more…)

Ouali-Jones added to ‘Star Power’

By Francisco Salazar

An attractive welterweight bout has been added to the “Star Power” card at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on September 17th. Golden Boy Promotions matchmaker Eric Gomez told Fightnews.com on Tuesday afternoon that contender Said Ouali (28-3 1 ND, 20 KO’s) will take on crafty veteran Carson Jones in a 10 round bout. Jones (31-8-2, 21 KO’s), who has won his last five bouts in a row by knockout, is currently in Big Bear, CA, where he is being used as a sparring partner for Saul Alvarez. He was victorious in his last bout in July, stopping former fringe contender Germaine Sanders in the sixth round.

Ouali, who fights under the Mayweather Promotions banner, stopped Dumont Welliver in his last bout in May. It was his first bout since the controversial second round no contest in December against Randall Bailey. In that bout, Ouali was injured after he fell over the top rope and onto a table after losing his balance when Bailey inadvertently lifted him onto the top rope following a clench. The Ouali-Jones bout will top the non-televised portion of the card.

Why Atlas changed his mind

ESPN2 Boxing commentator Teddy Atlas had announced on national TV that he wouldn’t be training heavyweight Alexander Povetkin because Povetkin would not train in the USA. However, Atlas suddenly changed his mind and missed several “Friday Night Fights” assignments to train Povetkin in Russia for Saturday’s showdown with Ruslan Chagaev for the WBA “regular” heavyweight title.

Teddy explains why he relented. “What happened was it got to be about three weeks before the fight and the fighter himself [Povetkin] and the people asked me to come over and I found out that they had made no other arrangements and the fighter was waiting for me and I had a decision to make, more from a personal standpoint, I guess a moral standpoint where I didn’t – you know, do I stay away from it? Because we didn’t have the situation that was agreed to,. my brain told me that a little bit, but my heart told me, do I want to be thinking about the fighter being left alone? And I didn’t want to be thinking about that.” (more…)

After stopping Lamon Brewster and Samuel Peter, the Nordic Nightmare comes face-to-face with Siarhei Liakhovich (25-3, 16 KOs). “This is going to be an unforgettable night of heavyweight boxing,” promoter Kalle Sauerland said at today´s press conference. “We have four potential heavyweight champions in the two main events. That´s about as good as it gets. Alexander Povetkin can finally crown his impressive career with a victory over Chagaev, who is an experienced and accomplished former champion.
