Brähmer sentenced to 16 months

WBO light heavyweight world champion Jürgen Brähmer has been sentenced to 16 months in prison for an alleged assault which caused bodily injury in a bar incident. Brähmer’s legal team plans to appeal the decision. Promoter Klaus-Peter Kohl continues to believe in the innocence of his fighter and hopes the decision will be overturned. “Today’s verdict is not yet final,” said Kohl. “We will calmly look at the sentencing memorandum and discuss it with Jürgen and his lawyers Eisenberg and King. They’ve already announced that they plan to appeal. Therefore we’re going forward with the presumption of innocence. Due to the positive statements of the experts and that not a single prosecution witness other than the plaintiff testified against Jurgen, I continue to believe in Jürgen’s innocence. We will continue to plan with him.”

Michael Katsidis update

Photo: Brendon Smith

By Craig Watt

WBO Interim 135 pound champion Michael Katsidis (26-2, 21 KOs) spoke to Fightnews today from his Las Vegas base and gave an update on his plans for 2010 that should see him secure a career defining fight for the popular Australian boxer from Toowoomba, Queensland. In 2008 he suffered back to back losses to Joel Casamayor (in one of the best fights of the year) and Juan Diaz but rebounded back in 2009 with three wins and defeated both Jesus Chavez and Vicente Escobedo, many commenting that his last two victories have been his most impressive in recent years where he has added improved boxing skills to his come forward aggressive style that has made him so popular. Report by Brady Crytzer

UFC lightweight contender Gray Maynard kept his unbeaten streak in tact by defeating The Ultimate Fighter 5 winner Nate Diaz by split decision on the campus of George Mason University Monday night in Fairfax, Va.

Although Maynard was undeafeated as a professional, he has been haunted by a prior exhibition loss during his tenure on The Ultimate Fighter 5 over two years ago. That loss was to the eventual winner Nate Diaz, the same man that he faced Monday night. Most promoters consider themselves fortunate to get one talented prospect signed at one time, but PR Best Boxing (Ivan & Peter Rivera) got double with their signing of twins McJoe and McWilliams Arroyo of Puerto Rico today. The Arroyos enter the professional ranks with a wealth of international amateur experience behind them. Both have represented Puerto Rico in several amateur games where they won multiple medals. Calderon-Viloria unification April

A proposed unification is being setup in April between WBO light flyweight champion Ivan ‘Iron Boy’ Calderon (33-0-1, 6 KOs) and IBF light flyweight champion Brian Viloria (26-2,15 KOs). There has been talk for quite awhile of the two squaring off as it is the biggest fight that can be made in their division currently. Aside from that the two have a history going back to their amateur days where they each enjoyed success by defeating one another. No exact date or venue has been named as of yet due to Viloria having an upcoming title defense against Carlos Tamara (20-4, 14 KOs) in the Philippines January 23rd.

Taylor out of Super Six

Former undisputed middleweight champion Jermain Taylor (28-4-1, 17 KOs) has made a decision regarding his future boxing career. Taylor, who was a participant in SHOWTIME Sports World Boxing Classic last fought on October 17th in a losing battle against Arthur Abraham in Berlin, Germany. “I’m going to take some time off from the sport of boxing and take myself out of the SHOWTIME Sports World Boxing Classic tournament. It’s important that I give my body and mind some much needed rest, because I have been boxing for nearly 20 years,” said Taylor. “I plan on keeping myself in shape and making a return to the sport sometime in the future. This was not an easy decision for me, having discussed it with my family, trainer, friends and my adviser Al Haymon, because I’m a very competitive person, but I know this is the smart road for me to take. I want to thank SHOWTIME Sports for everything and I wish the best for my 5 counterparts who will continue on in the Super Six tournament. Most of all, I want to thank the many fans for their continued support.”

Medley speaks

By Ray Wheatley–World of Boxing

Photo: Ray Wheatley--World of Boxing

Former WBA super middleweight champion Anthony Mundine was given a tough twelve round bout against former world title challenger Robert Medley on Monday. Medley said he was surprised that Mundine does not have “world class power” and that “The Man” would be knocked out by his gym mate Daniel Geale if they meet in a rematch. Robert Medley said, “I was surprised that Mundine has no power. He did not hurt me at any stage in the fight. I am sure I hurt him a few times when I connected with head shots. I am not 100% happy with my performance, I know I could have done more. Now that we have boxed at middleweight, I challenge him to come down to junior middleweight and fight me! The fight was supposed to be at that weight but I am sure he could not get the last five or six pounds off. I have sparred many rounds with Daniel Geale and he is a much harder puncher than Mundine. He staggered me in sparring recently with a power left hook. I could hear bells in my head! He would definitely stop Mundine if they boxed again!”

The 34-year-old Mundine is now unbeaten in the last five years since he lost on points to Mikkel Kessler in 2005 and has won his last fourteen bouts. DeMarco not awed by Valero

It can be said that with an impressive 26-0, 26KO ledger with the first eighteen knockouts in the first round, WBC lightweight champion Edwin Valero defeats many of his opponents before they even climb into the ring, reminiscent of one “Iron” Mike Tyson. One who is not swayed by Valero’s admirable record is his next opponent, the interim WBC lightweight title holder Antonio DeMarco (23-1-1, 17KO) of Tijuana, MX, by way of Los Mochis.

“I focus on my work. I don’t focus on the work of Edwin Valero. I don’t focus in his power or his record. I focus in my work so that we climb into the ring 100% ready and do the right things,” DeMarco stated as he finished off another training session. “I don’t notice the record of my opponents or on anything that I might be impressed by. I take care of working hard, at 100%, even if it means getting home dead tired. That is all I can do, to focus on my job and not what Edwin Valero is doing.”

The Valero-DeMarco WBC lightweight twelve round championship bout is slated for February 6th in Monterrey, MX and will be televised nationally by SHOWTIME.

WBF appoints Gottlieb

At the recently held World Boxing Federation (WBF) convention in Albania, the organization unanimously elected Butch Gottlieb, from the USA, as their commissioner of Women’s Boxing. Butch’s goals are very simple and that is to have credible champions in credible fights: “I believe that titles and title shots must be earned and not handed out just to fill a vacant title,” says Gottlieb, who also owns/operates the website BoxinginLasVegas.com. “I want to see more girls from the USA going to Europe to fight for and to defend titles and not have to worry about getting the short end of the scoring because the opponent is the promoter’s fighter. A level playing field is all the girls ask for, and they deserve just that. I will strive to see that happens.”
