McCall decisions Willis

By Peter Lim at ringside

Even at age 46, former WBC heavyweight titleholder Oliver McCall, 56-11 37 (KOs), retains the attribute that was his best asset when he in his heyday – his cast iron chin. McCall utilized that very quality to outpoint Damian Willis, 30-3-1 (23 KOs), over 10 rounds at the Houston Athletic Fencing Center on Saturday night. The Atomic Bull simply absorbing his younger opponent’s blows and bullied him with on the inside. McCall spent the first three rounds testing Willis’ punch and then proceeded to walk him down and bludgeon him with short punches thrown from both fists. Willis, 31, came in flabby around the midsection and by the fourth round, was huffing and puffing with every punch he threw. As the fight wore on, Willis’ punches began to lose steam and bounced harmlessly off McCall’s head, while McCall rocked Willis each time he scored a direct hit. But Willis denied McCall the openings for more than one clean shot at a time by smothering his attack by leaning and clinching, which resulted in sloppy action for much of the bout. Scores were 97-93 and 96-94 (twice) all for McCall. The bout was staged by Savarese Boxing Promotions. (more…)
