Cotto-Mayorga Quotes

Photos by Tom Casino/SHOWTIME

For a marquee pay-per-view affair entitled “Relentless,” Nicaraguan boxing superstar Ricardo Mayorga remains determined to live up to the event’s name with unyielding trash talk toward WBA Super Welterweight champion and the Pride of Puerto Rico, Miguel Cotto until the first bell of their championship matchup on Saturday, March 12 at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT LIVE on SHOWTIME PPV.

At Wednesday’s final press conference from the Media Center at MGM Grand, the mouthy former two-division world champion delivered some final verbal blows in his last official appearance behind the microphone before Saturday’s scrap. Cotto, though more reserved than Mayorga, provided his share of quips as well. As Mayorga taunted Cotto to take the traditional face off shot from the dais, Cotto responded, “You can take the picture with your mother,” and left the press conference.

Below are some highlights from the loud, spirited news conference, including quotes from Hall of Fame promoters Bob Arum, Don King and Cotto’s trainer Emmanuel Steward. For more details and photos click here…

Cotto backs off on face-off

Photos by Chris Cozzone

Photo: Despite Ricardo Mayorga’s best efforts to coax Miguel Cotto into posing for a face-off, at today’s final press conference held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, the feisty challenger glared in anger as the champion told him to “go take a picture with your mother.” After Cotto walked off the dais, Mayorga mouthed off a string of insults, calling Cotto a “maricon” (homosexual) for disrespecting the media. Stay tuned for more photos, quotes and a story.

More quotes by Andreas Hale:

Miguel Cotto: “I can retire anytime I want. I don’t have to do this. I’m ready for the fight. (Mayorga) can check with his promoter to see if I’m a 6-1 or an 8-1 favorite. We both know (Don King) has bet on the other fighter many times. This is not a game. The real game starts for me on Saturday.”

Emanuel Steward: “You can talk all you want but Don King will only wave one flag on Saturday night, the white flag.”

Don King: “Mayorga is going to surprise everyone in the world. It will be categorically beautiful.”

Ricardo Mayorga: “I’d like to thank Bob Arum for allowing me to eat his sheep on Saturday night. . . After I beat you on Saturday, I heard Ricky Martin is hiring backup dancers, go help him out.”

Trout targets Canelo

Photo: Team Trout

WBA super welterweight champion Austin Trout has not forgotten that newly crowned WBC counterpart Saul “Canelo” Alvrez claimed to have wanted revenge after Austin beat Canelo’s brother Rigoberto Alvarez in a one-sided fight, to claim the WBA world title. “Look, I know that I have to prove to the fans that I am a real champion,” said Trout. “I don’t care about keeping my unbeaten record as much as I care about giving fans a fight that they want to see. I have a few names in line that I plan on fighting. Saul Alvarez is clearly one of them. He wanted to avenge the beating I gave his brother. I was willing to fight him before he won the WBC title, so it is not about him becoming a champion. He is a nice guy and I respect what he is doing for boxing…at the same time, the honeymoon is over. Every one of us holding a title will need to push ourselves by fighting solid competition. He has never faced anyone as good as me.”
