“Rey” ready to shine in Vegas!

Mexican contender Gabriel “Rey” Martínez (27-1-1, 14 KOs) says he is ready for his Mexico vs. Philippines clash on the undercard of the Fernando Montiel vs. Nonito Donaire bill this weekend in Las Vegas. Martinez will face fellow welterweight contender Mark Melligen (20-2, 14 KOs), in a 10 round fight he says, given the skills and records, could steal the spotlight. If he comes out victorious, Martínez, promoted by Latin Sports, knows that he will get close to a title shot – and that has him motivated and eager to win and shine in boxing’s world capital.

Wilder’s homecoming

Story and photo by Scott Foster

In the past two years, the state of Alabama has once again defined excellence in NCAA football, birthing two national championship teams led by two Heisman trophy winners.

Alabama’s lone Olympic boxing medalist, Tuscaloosa native Deontay Wilder, labored hard during those same 24 months, striving to supplant the storied tradition of football in Alabama by championing for, and now ushering in, the State’s first Boxing Athletic Commission . . . click here for more

Bozic injury confirmed

WBA #9 super middleweight Stjepan Bozic has been diagnosed with ligament damage to his index finger metacarpophalangeal joint – probably an old injury that was aggrevated when he punched Arthur Abraham’s elbow on February 12. On Thursday the Sauerland team received the official medical documentation and MRI results from Croatia and ring doctor Dr. Hubert Klauser, a specialist for orthopedics, surgery and hand surgery, confirmed the injury after viewing the supplied information, adding that Bozic should do no punching for at least six weeks and put stress on the hand only sparingly. The findings vindicate Bozic who was accused of faking the injury. “I’m no actor,” said Bozic. “I would have gladly given the fans a longer fight with an another, better ending. Unfortunately, with the injury it wasn’t possible, as confirmed by the MRI.”

Warburton ready for 2nd chance

UFC 127 is LIVE on PPV Feb. 26!

Your commute to work ain’t got nothing on Curt Warburton’s trek to Sydney, Australia for his UFC 127 bout against Maciej Jewtuszko. First, the lightweight prospect drove two and a half hours from his home in Bishop Auckland, County Durham, England to Manchester Airport. Then it was an hour flight to Heathrow, followed by flights to Bangkok and then Sydney, which clocked in at 12 and 10 hours, respectively. Yet you won’t hear any complaining from Warburton. . . . Tyson Marquez gets title shot

Photo: Rafael Soto/Zanfer

After confirmation of his April 2 title shot against WBA interim flyweight champion Luis “Nica” Concepción (22-1, 17 KOs), Hernan “Tyson” Marquez (29-2, 22 KOs) says he is very motivated and confident that he will bring Mexico and Sonorans the championship he’s dreamed of. Promociones y Eventos del Istmo officially announced the fight card Thursday, which will also feature a WBA female super bantamweight clash between Chantall “La Fiera” Martínez and Lisa “Bad News” Brown.

“This is my dream, my goal and this time I will be fighting at my natural weight,” said Marquez. “Concepción is a great champion, but I have no doubt I’ll win. I know he’s at home, but I trust that the judges and referee the WBA appoints will be impartial and it will be a great fight for the fans as we both like to trade blows.”

Soto-Karass aiming for a KO

By Francisco Salazar

Photo: Chris Farina/Top Rank

Not many athletes could proudly say that they gained more from a defeat. Although the goal is to be triumphant in competition, athletes can learn from their mistakes and make the most of a second opportunity. Welterweight Jesus Soto-Karass is one of those athletes, even though there were members of the media who thought that he should have had his hand raised and not Mike Jones back in November at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX.

The hard-hitting welterweight thinks he gained more fans and more appeal from networks from his 10 round majority decision defeat at the hands of the unbeaten Jones.

Soto-Karass will hope to gain a measure of revenge when he takes on Jones in a 10 round bout at the Mandalay Bay Events Center on Saturday night. The bout, which will precede the highly-anticipated bantamweight showdown between Fernando Montiel and Nonito Donaire, will be televised on HBO’s “Boxing After Dark.” (more…)

Sweetpea: I’m giving Zab the facts

Ring legend Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker spoke to reporters Thursday about Zab Judah’s training camp progress in preparation for his March 5th IBF jr. welterweight title against Kaizer Mabuza at the Prudential Center’s AmeriHealth Pavilion, Newark, NJ. Judah has been frequently compared to fellow southpaw, Whitaker, who was also promoted by Main Events, and “Sweet Pea” says he’s taking Zab to a whole new level. “You can’t even imagine the feelings I am having right now about this kid (Judah),” said Whitaker. “He’s like a student all over again, it’s like re-teaching the guy some of the best things about himself. Nobody probably knows better than me, other than his father, about his fight game. It’s been easy for me to give him the transformation to do all the things I know he can do very well, and to please the crowd.” (more…)

FBHOF recognizes Morris Reif

By Phil Doherty

Photo: Sam Cohen

His eyes still steely sharp, his hands still dense and quick, his arms still taut and muscled. He hunches slightly forward but evenly balanced just in case he needs to pivot a left hook. Chances are Morris Reif doesn’t need to summon the professional skills that earned him a spot in the long line of great Jewish boxers from New York.

But it’s nice to know (at 88 years of age) he still could.

Reif was born to the fighting streets of Brownsville, Brooklyn back when this was a separate city from New York. These same streets would harvest future heavyweight champions like Floyd Patterson, Riddick Bowe, Shannon Briggs and Mike Tyson. Reif fought almost daily in these streets for whatever spare money he could earn.

Mostly he fought because he loved to fight. (more…)
