Domingo-Melendez in Cebu?

By Nick Giongco

Cebu boxing impresario Tony Aldeguer said on Tuesday that a show featuring Michael Domingo and Colombian Luis Melendez is being eyed for May 1 in Cebu. Melendez is best remembered by boxing fans for his 12-round decision loss to Z Gorres late last year in Las Vegas. Although Gorres won, the Filipino collapsed as he was celebrating on top of the ring. Melendez floored Gorres with a wicked blow to the jaw late in the fight and that punch was said to have caused the bleeding in Gorres’ brain. Gorres was rushed to the hospital for head injuries and immediately underwent an operation to remove a clot in his brain. Gorres wound up spending over two months in a Las Vegas hospital recovering before being allowed to go back to the Philippines. Aldeguer said Gorres’ fast recovery is “unbelievable.”

Two-division world champion Bernard Hopkins worked out for the media on Tuesday at the Normandy Gym in Miami Beach in advance of his April 3 revenge rematch with Roy Jones Jr. in Las Vegas. “I want it so badly and really I want Roy to be able to remember this beating I am about to give him for making me wait so long,” said Hopkins. “But now the wait is over, I am going old school and back to the days of the Executioner. He delayed it too long but his days are now over, the Governor has spoken and April 3 will be the day.” Click here for more quotes and photos

Roy Jones Jr. workout pix

Four-division world champion Roy Jones Jr. worked out for the media on Monday at his farm in Cantonment, Florida (about 10 miles north of downtown Pensacola) in advance of his April 3 grudge rematch with Bernard Hopkins in Las Vegas. “Bernard Hopkins is a shark,” said Jones. “He’s a bottom feeder. He’s catfish. He’s waiting around for someone to die, and then he’ll bite into it. If something is dead, he’ll try to taste it. If something is alive, he doesn’t want any part of it. If something is close to dead he’ll try to eat it. “He wanted to wait until I was done. He didn’t have anywhere else to go and now he thinks he’ll get his revenge and ride out into the sunset. That’s the only way he is looking at it. It won’t be happening that way but that is the plot.” Click here for more quotes and photos

Bute bringing Miami Heat

Dave Spencer

By Dave Spencer/Fightnews Canada

It was a question that was answered before it was even asked. Seeing a tanned and relaxed Lucian Bute emerge in a pair of flip-flops and shorts as he welcomed the media to his palatial Miami estate that has been home since mid-February, it becomes very clear, very quickly why the Montreal boxer has decided to go south to prepare for his upcoming April 17th IBF championship bout versus Edison Miranda.

“Since I’ve become world champion my life has changed in Montreal. I walk on the street and everybody wants to talk to me, my phone is always ringing, it makes it hard to focus on my training and focus on my preparations. I came to Miami just to focus on what I have to do to get ready. It’s all hard training and relaxation, good food, watch video of my opponent and work on strategy.” For more details and photos click here…

Berto: I’ll dispose of Quintana

WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (25-0, 19 KOs) says he won’t be taking challenger Carlos Quintana (27-2-0, 21 KOs) for granted when he returns to the ring for the first time in eleven months on April 10th at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla. Berto was scheduled to face WBA champ “Sugar” Shane Mosley in January 2010, but the earthquake in Haiti forced him to withdraw from that bout (Berto tragically lost eight family members in the disaster). “He’s a tough veteran,” Berto said of Quintana. “If you give him too much room or a little too much confidence he will take advantage of that. You have to impose your dominance early. I’m in a tough situation. Realistically I train hardest when a lot of people expect me to win. He’s a spoiler and he did the same with Paul Williams and I have to make sure I stay sharp and do a good job and dispose of him.”
—–
The co-feature will showcase WBA junior featherweight champion Celestino Caballero (33-2, 23 KOs), who will be moving up to take on unbeaten WBA #2 contender Daud Yordan (25-0, 19 KOs) in a non-title featherweight affair. Two time Olympic gold medalist from Cuba, Guillermo Rigondeaux (5-0, 4 KOs) will also appear on the undercard.

The event is billed as “Fighting For Haiti” and a portion of the proceeds will go to the Berto Dynasty Foundation to help aide those affected by the deadly Haitian temblor.
