MemphisBoxing.com met with former two time Heavyweight Champion of the World and 5th ranked heavyweight, Hasim “The Rock” Rahman (49-7-2, 40 KO’s) during a media luncheon held Thursday at iHop Restaurant. Rahman is in Memphis, TN, in advance of his fight which takes place at the DeSoto Civic Center, in Southaven, MS, Saturday, June 11. Originally slated to face Willie Herring in the TNT main event, Rahman now faces Galen Brown (35-16-1, 22 KO’s).

When asked about the late switch in opponents and if it affected his training, Rahman said, “Not really. I mean, I brought my tools (Rahman held up his two giant fists). Its not like I would have brought a different tool for Willie than I would have brought for Galen. When I get to beatin’ on the drum. Burns warns Cook

Fired up WBO super featherweight champion Ricky Burns has warned challenger Nicky Cook that he is no bottle job. The pair meet at the Liverpool Echo Arena on July 16th. Cook got on Burns’ bad side when he slammed Burns fellow Scottish fighters Scott Harrison and Alex Arthur. Former WBO featherweight champ Harrison pulled out of his fight against Cook in December 2006, which promoted Cook to call him a bottle job. Cook then beat Arthur to claim the WBO super featherweight title two years later.

“I’m looking forward to getting Cook in Liverpool next month and giving him the hardest night of his life,” said Burns. “Cook has got a lot of talk saying that Harrison bottled it and that he beat Arthur, but he’s not faced Ricky Burns in his career and he’ll know about it on July 16. Every world title defence is special but fighting an Englishman in England gives me that extra bit between my teeth to put on a top performance and stop Cook. I’m so up for this fight that my trainer Billy Nelson has had to slow me down. Nicky better bring his A game or else he will be in trouble.”

Harris camp cries foul

Heavyweight Maurice Harris’ promoter Boxing 360 has asked the IBF for a review of Harris’ May 27th KO loss to Tony “The Tiger” Thompson in an IBF heavyweight box-off. The Harris camp alleges that Harris was the victim of more than 20 illegal rabbit punches in the second and third rounds and that referee Vic Drakulich failed to issue a single warning. “We believe the referee did a very poor job and Maurice never had a fair fighting chance because of all the rabbit punches,” Boxing 360 Founder/CEO Mario Yagobi explained. “My job is to protect our fighters. We just want the IBF, boxing media and fans to look at what happened and then draw their own conclusions. There’s a reason Maurice fought the way he did and that was the direct result of the referee not doing his job.”

Universum responds to Golovkin

Dietmar Poszwa, Universum Managing Director: “Gennady Golovkin is allowing the news be spread on various boxing websites that he has achieved his objective in getting away from Universum and being a free agent from November 2011. In this respect, it needs to be clarified the following…

“Mr Golovkin completely failed with his lawsuit before Hamburg District Court to have the exclusive contract with Universum effectively terminated in January 2010. The court determined the unrestricted effectiveness of this contract concluded in November 2005 for the period of a total of six years. Mr Golovkin has now also failed with an application before the Appellate Court to have the enforcement of this judgement of the Court of First Instance temporarily discontinued. He based this application on the supposed defectiveness of the judgement of the Court of First Instance and apparent ineffectiveness of the contract. The Appellate Court also did not follow his views and instead of this suggested that he withdraws this application irrevocably with the consequence that Mr Golovkin is furthermore forbidden, on the basis of the exclusive contract until the contractually agreed end of the contract in November 2011, to take part in boxing matches in violation of Universum’s exclusive rights. Universum has waived a right to even extend the contract beyond the contractual expiry for periods lost by the boxer’s illness, since there were no such periods. (more…)

WBA super-feather champ, unbeaten Japanese Takashi Uchiyama made a debut as guest professor of his alma mater Takushoku University on June 1. The champ made an excellent lecture on a subject “To seize a chance” according to his own experience before three hundred students for an hour at the auditorium. Uchiyama did it so well that people say he would really become a professor after hanging up gloves for good in the future. He said, “its good for mental training to speak in front of a big audience. That may do me good in the ring.”

OPBF female super-fly champ Naoko Yamaguchi (17-3-3, 15 KOs), 114.75, impressively kept her regional belt as she battered game Thailander Reantong Rongrearnkilalorat (7-4-2, no KO), 115, from all angles and finally halted her at 0:30 of the fifth round this Monday (June 6) in Tokyo, Japan. Prior to the main event there was a ceremony to celebrate ex-WBC female minimum champ Naoko Kikuchi’s farewell to the ring. It was a 55-year-old ex-WBA junior fly champ, her manager Yoko Gushiken, that engaged in a two-round exhibition with Kikuchi. Amazingly could Gushiken (23-1, 15 KOs) move very well with his well-educated good balance and sharply punched southpaw jabs to handle Kikuchi.
