Edgar Sosa: Simply stated, I am predicting a knockout victory within seven rounds. It will be a great night for Mexico. I don’t underestimate Soto, but I just feel like a tank right now and I’m going to roll all over him.

Omar Soto: The crowd is not going to be in the ring with us. The title is going back to Puerto Rico. Mexican fans are in for a bad surprise.

Jacques Deschamps (Sosa’s manager): Soto is a good fighter but he’s not going to stop the Sosa-express. We have great plans for Edgar for 2010.

Fausto Daniel Garcia (promoter): I expect a great, exciting night for Mexican boxing. Edgar Sosa and Canelo Alvarez are the best we can offer on this historic day of September 15th.

Sosa looking to set record

Courtesy ESTO

Courtesy ESTO

By Robert Coster

The 15th of September is a special day for Mexico as it marks the “Grito de Dolores” – the cry for independance by one of its founding fathers. It will also be special for WBC light-flyweight champion Edgar Sosa as he steps into the ring in the city of Puebla for his 10th title defense against Omar “Pastor” Soto of Puerto Rico. Sosa (36-5, 20 KOs) will be setting a record for most title defenses by a Mexican boxer in this weight class. “I am very happy,” says Edgar, “because when I won the title two years ago, not many boxing writers expected me to be a lasting champion. Now what I have to do on Tuesday is put up a great show in what may be my last defense at 108lbs.” Sosa is expected to move up to the flyweight division. The very popular champion, unbeaten in over six years, will be headlining a megacard aptly called “Viva Mexico” which will also feature sensational redhead welterweight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. The much anticipated boxing extravaganza promoted by Fausto Daniel Garcia will be held at the Siglo XXI auditorium which is already sold-out.

Being the underdog in the champion’s backyard doesn’t bother Omar “Pastor” Soto. “I know God is looking out for me,” proclaims the deeply religious Soto (14-3-1, 6 KOs) who predicts that he will stun the Mexican audience by beating the favored Sosa. (more…)

Camacho to face Campas!

By David Finger

Coming off his tougher than expected win over former NABF champion Israel “Pito” Cardona, Hector “Machito” Camacho Jr. (49-3-1, 27 KOs) is already set to bring his “Latin Invasion” to hostile territory as he faces former IBF light middleweight world champion Luis “Yori Boy” Campas (92-14-1, 74 KO’s) at the Don Haskins Center on the campas of UTEP in El Paso, Texas on October 30th. In a fight promoted by Zeferino Entertainment, both Campas and Camacho have already expressed a degree of animosity towards each other. The bad blood between Campas and Camacho began as early as May of this year, when Campas fought the elder Hector Camacho. Against Senior, Campas was held to a draw in Florida, but his distain for the Puerto Rican Camacho clan was apparent to all. (more…)

The Business of Boxing

By David Finger

With ten days to go before the biggest PPV fight of the year, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer and HBO Pay-Per-View Senior Vice President Mark Taffet held a international media conference call in New York City to “discuss the current state of the Mega-Fight” and the changes in how this fight has been marketed to the general population. Although there are few observers who feel that this fight will not be one of, if not the, biggest PPV fight of the year, there are still many critics who felt that the economic recession coupled with the emergence of Mixed Martial Arts would slowly, but surely take a toll on boxing and PPV revenue. But Schaefer and Taffet both discussed many of the new and innovative ways that they are marketing this fight to both the traditional boxing fan and the younger generation of boxing fan. (more…)

Cotto, Pacman Puerto Rico quotes

By Lee Bates

The press conference in Caguas, Puerto Rico on Saturday to promote the November 14th showdown between welterweight champion Miguel Cotto and Pound for Pound King Manny Pacquiao definitely was a positive promotion for the fight. Bob Arum’s Top Rank had every aspect of the event on point and everything ran on a smooth punctual schedule. The entrance for the two fighters was very exciting as they were both elevated from underground in their chairs and up to the main stage. The entrance brought a huge roar from the large crowd who packed the venue which was a Theater setting. In a day and age where some press conferences are marred by verbal jabs and sometimes physical ones, it was a pleasant sight to see two combatants show ultimate respect for each other. “I welcome Manny Pacquiao to Puerto Rico and he is always welcome here,” said Cotto.
Freddie Roach: I know Miguel Cotto better than anybody right now. I’ve been watching videos of his fights for a month straight now. This is boxing at its best. We want to fight the best in boxing and one of those is Miguel Cotto.
Manny Pacquiao: No one knows who is going to win this fight. We are both going deliver our best efforts which will give the fans an excellent show.
Miguel Cotto: On November 14th we are both seeking victory. I’m confident that I will return to Puerto Rico on November 15th with my title. (crowd erupts)

In a battle of unbeaten fighters, super lightweight Eloy Perez (14-0-2, 3 KOs) won a hard-fought 10 round unanimous decision over Dannie Williams (12-1, 9 KOs) at the Playboy Mansion in Holmby Hills, CA. Both fighters were dropped once in the second round and Perez went down again in the third. However, Perez landed the more telling punches during the rest of the bout. All three judges scored the bout 98-91, 97-92, and 95-94.
