Shumenov-Campillo Update!

By Alexey Sukachev and Leonid Yuryev

As it was previously announced by Fightnews, Kazakh light heavyweight marvel Beibut Shumenov (8-0, 6 KOs) will face the reigning WBA champion Gabriel Campillo (18-2-1, 6 KOs) for his title on August 15 in Kazakhstan. It was confirmed today by the sources at KZ Event Productions that this fight will land in Astana, the capital of the state. Kazakh president Nursultan Nazarbayev is invited to visit the show and he will most probably be in attendance for this match-up. WBA #7 (as well as the WBO #9 and the WBC #15) Shumenov will try to become the third ever world champion from Kazakhstan, following former cruiserweight star Vassily Jirov (IBF champion in 1999-2003) and super featherweight Anatoly Alexandrov (WBO titlist in 1998-1999). Should he be victorious in his ninth fight as a pro the next month, Beibut will also set a world record in his weight class for winning the title in a minimal number of bouts. The pro debut of former amateur standout Abzal Adambaev (at super featherweight limit) is expected in undercard in addition to previously announced fights.

Hopoate defeats Mirovic!

By Ray Wheatley — World of Boxing

Australian heavyweight champion John Hopoate (12-3, 11 KOs) dominated Bob Mirovic (29-21-2, 20 KOs) in a rematch over ten rounds at the AIS arena, Canberra, ACT, Australia on Thursday. The powerful Hopoate, 253lbs, controlled the action in all the rounds as he bulldozed the 6.5″ Mirovic, 264 lbs, and consistently connected with hard head and body shots that visibly hurt the veteran. A right hand to the head in round seven staggered Mirovic but he remained upright and in round eight Big Bob complained to the referee Brian McMahon that Hoppa was trying to break his arm in the clinches. In their first fight in 2008 Mirovic’s arm was broken. Both fighters were fatigued in rounds nine and ten and at the conclusion Hopoate was declared the winner by scores Anthony Shipley 99-90, Pat Oconnell 97-94, Bernie McMahon 99-91. Marquez: I’m stronger than ever!

Photo: Golden Boy

Photo: Golden Boy

Reports out of Mexico City, where five-time world champion Juan Manuel Marquez is back in training for his scheduled September 19 PPV clash against Floyd Mayweather (Mayweather vs. Marquez “Number One/Numero Uno”), confirm that Marquez is bigger, stronger and punching “to the body” harder than ever as he pushes his training regime to new heights in preparation for his ultimate challenge against Mayweather. Eyewitnesses say it’s evident that not only is Marquez bigger, but his training includes a special focus on body work and technique as he looks to defeat the undefeated Mayweather, a six-time world champion in five weight divisions. “I know where he’s been hurt and I’m going for it,” said Marquez. “He is vulnerable now and I will take advantage of his weakness with a body attack that emphasizes two things-the right and the left.” For more details and photos click here…

Wladimir: Haye unprofessional!

Wladimir Klitschko has ripped David Haye and his team for pulling out of a September 12 fight against his brother Vitali Klitschko in Frankfurt. “Already during the negotiations for my June fight, we realized quickly that Haye and Booth are very unprofessional. Booth might be a good trainer but as a manager he is simply incompetent. David always had a big mouth and tried to offend us with ridiculous self-made t shirts. But when it comes up to step into the ring and show what he’s got, he runs away. He even admits that fighting Valuev is the easier way. For me Haye is a little, inexperienced kid who is afraid of his own courage. Doubtless, my brother would have knocked him out within the first four rounds.” (more…)

South Africa Boxing Buzz!

By Ron Jackson

Manelisi Mbilase defends his South African featherweight title against Thando Vukuza at the Orient Theatre in East London on Friday night. Mbilase (10-3, 2 KOs) won the vacant title at Carletonville in October last year on a highly disputed points decision against Vukuza who has a reported record of (5-4-1). In their first fight , Vukuza appeared to have ouboxed Mbilase, but the judges decided otherwise. Even Nick Durandt who was Mbilase’s trainer at the time admitted that his fighter was lucky to get the decision. Boxing SA ordered a rematch and at one time when no promoter was prepared to put the fight they considered having the fight in a gymnasium with no payment to the boxers in terms of the Boxing Act. Both fight from the southpaw stance and have rather patchy records in a fight that is expected to go the distance once again. However, Vukuza must be favored to gain revenge and take the title.
—–
Meanwhile it has been reported that Robs Promotions will present a tripleheader in Bloemfontein on August 7. Topping the bill will be William Gare who will defend his WBF super middleweight belt against Rigoberto Alvarez (22-0, 16 KOs) from Mexico. Alvarez is the Mexican super middleweight champion and rated at #14 by the WBC. WBF lightweight champion Mlungisi Dlamini faces Francisco Lorenzo of the Dominican Republic (33-5, 14 KOs). Lorenzo holds wins over the highly rated Nate Campbell, Cristobal Cruz (twice) and Humberto Soto. Bongani Mwelase fights Attila Kovacs (25-3, 7 KOs) of Hungary for the vacant WBF super middleweight belt.
—–
On August 28 Lbubalo Msutu defends his WBF bantamweight belt against Nick Otieno (18-2, 7 KOs) of Kenya in East London.

Francois Botha is scheduled to defend his WBF heavyweight belt at a venue to be announced in Europe sometime in October.

It ‘s not easy trying to stay cool this time of year when you reside in the desert community of North Palm Springs, Calif., where temperatures hover around or top 100 degrees nearly every day and night. Factor in the heat former undisputed lightweight champion Nate “Galaxxy Warrior” Campbell is expected to bring on Saturday, Aug. 1, and one might expect unbeaten world junior welterweight champion Timothy Bradley to be a tad on edge these days. But less than two weeks away from the biggest and perhaps toughest fight of his career, “Desert Storm” not only is coping with the elements in and out of the ring, but he is relishing the opportunity to prove that he is the No. 1 140 pounder in the world. Haye to fight Valuev instead!

Former undisputed world cruiserweight champion David ‘The Hayemaker’ Haye has pulled out of an announced September 12 showdown with WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko and signed a contract to meet current WBA heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev on November 7, at a location yet to be decided but expected to take place in Germany. “I am thrilled to announce that my dream of becoming world heavyweight champion will be realised on November 7, when I challenge the tallest and heaviest champion of all time, Nikolai Valuev,” said Haye. “Valuev’s known as ‘The Beast From The East’ and there’s a reason he’s got that nickname – he’s a big, ugly, sweaty and hairy man from the Eastern Bloc. Valuev is eight stone heavier than me and a foot taller than me. David only needed a slingshot and a stone to flatten Goliath, and I’m convinced my right hand generates more power than a stone.” (more…)
