Burns: I’ll retire Cook

WBO super featherweight champion Ricky Burns expects to see the best of Nicky Cook next month – but still plans on sending him into retirement when they meet on July 16 at the Liverpool Echo Arena. “I believe that Nicky will be at the top of his game,” said Burns. “He will have got rid of his ring rust with his win in his last fight, and he’ll be coming up to Liverpool full of belief. But I will knock him out whatever shape he is in. That’s a promise. Cook is not good enough to live with me and I will break his heart. In fact, I think he will quit boxing after he has lost to me. You can’t afford to take breaks in this sport, and he is going to pay dearly for the time he has spent out of the ring. I’m younger, fresher and fitter and I will take him out on July 16.” (more…)

Former world champion Antonio “Magic Man ” Tarver(28-6, 19 KOs) is training hard in Florida for his July 20 IBO cruiserweight challenge against Danny “Green Machine” Green (31-3, 27 KOs) at Sydney Entertainment Center but is confident he has the skills and power to defeat the tough as nails Australian.

“He’s a good fighter, ” said Tarver said of Green. “He’s won multiple titles in different weight classes and he’s a very tough guy and he has a lot of power. I know he’ll be trying to knock me out – something that’s never been done before – and vice versa. I’m going to try to knock him out too, so I think with our personalities, it’s like two locomotives heading on one course. We’re looking to collide, and that’s the type of fight that people are going to see.” (more…)

Alvarez is still learning his craft at just 20 years of age, but to make a fighter of Rhodes’s experience look as if he didn’t belong in the same ring stamped “Canelo” as a bit special. Rhodes gave his best effort but it was never going to be enough. It was Alvarez who looked like the more seasoned fighter because he was treating Rhodes almost like a sparring partner. (more…)

Felix Sturm: Patron for “Kids for Future”

Story by Wolfgang Schiffbauer

In the week before an important world title fight, most boxers are not keen on being in public that much. They participated in the final press conference, an open workout and the weigh-in – but that’s about it. WBA middleweight world champion Felix Sturm made an exception to this rule yesterday. After attending the presser for his Saturday clash with Ireland’s Matthew Macklin, the 32-years old Sturm had another appointment. He made a stop at the charity project “Kids for Future” and visited a group of children at a boxing workout. The three-time middleweight champion took the time to explain the cause, did a little training routine with the kids, posed for pictures and wrote endless autographs. (more…)

Lee to make comeback

By Joe Koizumi

Having been dethroned by Akifumi Shimoda in his initial defense, former WBA 122-pound champ Ryol-li Lee (AKA Retsuri Lee) will make a comeback against ex-national super-bantam ruler Rikiya Fukuhara (24-5-1, 18 KOs) in Tokyo, Japan, on August 6. Lee (17-2-1, 8 KOs), a legitimate featherweight as he had held the national belt at this weight, moved down to the 122-pound category and surprisingly captured the WBA throne by an upset verdict (115-113, 115-114 and 118-110) over Pongsaklek Kratingdaeng-Gym last October. After his forfeiture of the belt to Shimoda last January, Lee, suffered a pitiful passing of his manager/promoter Kazunori Miyakawa this May. Fukuhara is a slick-punching boxer-puncher who is never an easy trial horse for Lee, a lanky counterpuncher, who is gunning for a shot at a world feather belt in the future. On the same bill, once-beaten bantam prospect Ryosuke Iwasa (8-1, 6 KOs), ex-national high school champ, will also participate in a comebacking bout against Indonesian titlist Rasmanudin after his failure to win the national belt from world-rated Shinsuke Yamanaka in March.

Akaho, Sato collide in August

By Joe Koizumi

Highly anticipated is a forthcoming encounter of world-rated Japanese 115-pounders Ryo Akaho (16-0-2, 10 KOs) and Yota Sato (20-2, 12 KOs) with the former’s OPBF super-fly belt on the line in Tokyo, Japan, on August 4. Akaho lately acquired the vacant OPBF throne by halting Australian titlist Fred Mundraby via fifth round stoppage this May. The challenger Sato is a WBC#4/WBC#5 contender, holding his national belt which won’t be at stake this time. Sato, making his third defense, recently kept his Japanese title against world-rated veteran Kohei Kono to his credit. The unbeaten Akaho is fast and can punch, while Sato is more skillful and experienced. It will be a very important and competitive confontation of the near-future world challengers.

There’s a funny story. Masaru Yamada, of Yokohama Hikari Promotions that handles the defending OPBF ruler Akaho, took a plane from Thailand back to Tokyo, Japan, some weeks ago. He enjoyed a chat with a stewardess therein, saying he’s a boxing person. He boasted of his gym’s hot prospect Akaho and mentioned his next bout with the national champ Sato. She then replied, “The opponent Yota is my brother.” Yamada was greatly stunned by the coincidence. Good luck for both.
