Team Khan response

Team Khan is extremely disappointed with the recent press release sent out by Paul McCloskey’s promoter, Barry Hearn, accusing Amir Khan of using the Irish fighter to get a cheap title defense.

According to Team Khan, a substantial offer was put to McCloskey’s team that would have seen the Irishman receive up to three times the amount he has ever been paid for a fight. McCloskey’s promoter asked for a purse over five times the amount he has ever received. Every time Team Khan believed that they were close to agreeing terms with McCloskey, his team would move the goalposts and ultimately their demands were rejected as being unrealistic. (more…)

Legend of South African ring dies

By Ron Jackson

One of the legends of the South African ring Nkosana “Happyboy’ Mgxaji passed away in Durban on Thursday. He was 61. Happyboy was probably the best of the many outstanding fighters from the Eastern Cape. He was certainly one of the best South African boxers who never won a world title. Mgxaji had lost only once in 73 fights when, at the age of 30, he challenged Samuel Serrano of Puerto Rico for the WBA junior lightweight title. (more…)

Cowboy on the move

UFC 126 is LIVE on PPV Feb. 5!

2010 was supposed to be the biggest year in sports for the name, Cowboy.  In Dallas, NFL owner Jerry Jones, who is the pied piper of the name, built a stadium so large that the world had to bow down to Cowboy blue.  Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on who you talk to) although the stadium will host the 2011 Super Bowl, his ‘boys will not do battle within it on that February day . . . Sergei Dzinziruk camp diary

By Alexey “Oscar” Potapov

Photo: Marcos Perez

WBO junior middleweight champion Sergiy Dzinziruk (37-0, 23 KOs) spoke to Fightnews.com about his upcoming fight against WBC middleweight champion emeritus Sergio Martinez (46-2-2, 25 KOs) on March 12 at Foxwoods in Mashantucket, Connecticut. The winner will get the WBC Diamond belt.

Camp Location: Preparation for the fight goes as we had planned, in Los Angeles. I am in training camp the second week. I’m working with a new trainer – James (Buddy) McGirt. He is an excellent trainer who has trained boxers like Antonio Tarver, Arturo Gatti, Nate Campbell, Vernon Forrest and Paul Malignaggi. In the past he was a great champion and in working with him I’ve received a lot that is useful to myself. He knows how to win big fights and Buddy will help me get recognition in America. Before this time I trained in Kiev, Ukraine. I’ve adapted to the time zones perfectly. I feel good. (more…)

Results from Houston

By Peter Lim at ringside
Photo: Peter Lim

Featherweight Miguel Flores, 8-0 ( 5 KOs), returned from a six-month layoff due to a knuckle injury to stop previously undefeated Rheno Nieto, 2-1 (2 KOs), in the fourth round at the Houston Club. Flores, 18, mercilessly zeroed in on the torso with left hooks and straight rights from the opening bell, while Nieto, 21, ferociously returned fire with both fists. Seconds before the end of the first round, Nieto caught Flores with a right to the head that stopped him in his tracks. A crunching left hook to the ribcage dropped Nieto to a knee in the second round. Nieto beat the count, and although visibly still hurt, he gamely fought Flores off and survived the round. Flores continued to viciously pummel to the body in the third, and by the fourth Nieto was completely depleted and fighting on guts alone. After two more knockdowns courtesy of body punches, referee Gary Simon mercifully called a halt to the bout. The fight was staged by Savarese Boxing Promotions. (more…)

Miguel Cotto gives back

Brad Solomon gives prediction

By Phil Doherty
Photos: Sam Cohen, Reynaldo Sanchez

Walk into the Heavyweight Factory gym in Hollywood FL. and you will see the words BLOOD, SWEAT, NO FEAR inked in large block letters along the north interior wall. Today that motto appears especially appropriate with the ongoing training camp of WBA super welterweight champion Miguel Angel Cotto (35-2, 28 KOs).

Miguel is a boxer with the heart of a warrior. His epic battles against the best of the junior welterweight, welterweight and light middleweight divisions prove he leaves his all in the ring.

He leaves a lot of his heart with people outside the ring too. That’s because Cotto spends his time, energy and resources helping his fellow Puerto Ricans through two organizations. The first is “Miguel Cotto Promotions”: a boxing promotional joint venture with Héctor Soto and H2 Entertainment. (more…)
