Gonzales stops Naugler

By AJ Bellegarde/FightNews Canada

At the Commonwealth Center in Calgary, Alberta, Jesus “El Martillo” Gonzales improved his record to 25-1 with 14 KOs stopping the usually durable Jason Naugler at the end of the second round. After a slow openning frame, Gonzales openned up throwing punches with a barrage to start the second and never let up. It seemed as if he couldnt miss his Maritime target, virtually hitting him at will. Naugler (18-14, 11 KOs) valiantly tried to return fire but missed far more than he landed. Near the end of the round, Gonzales landed heavy hooks to the body causing Naugler to return to his corner at the end of the round favoring the right side of this body. Citing a rib injury, Naugler’s corner signalled their surrender giving the Phoenix, Arizona southpaw the victory. (more…)

Pacquiao-Margarito wraps

By Nick Giongco

Representatives from the Texas Boxing Commission (TBC) will be on hand to monitor the wrapping of hands of Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito inside their respective dressing rooms Saturday night at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Pacquiao adviser Mike Koncz said on Friday that the gloves and handwraps of the two fighters will be taken by the TBC shortly after their scheduled 12-round world super-welterweight title match. Aside from the presence of the TBC officials, representatives from Pacquiao and Margarito will be on hand when the wrapping of the hands starts.

This was decided upon owing to the handwraps controversy Margarito was involved in two years ago going into the fight with Shane Mosley. It was later discovered that Margarito’s wraps were loaded and he eventually was suspended for more than a year by the state of California.

Josesito pounds Rivera

Photo: Photos: Big Joe Miranda

Popular Southern California junior welterweight Jose “Josesito” Lopez stopped Sergio Rivera in round three of a scheduled 8 round welterweight contest on Friday night at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, California. It was a tactical fight for the first couple rounds before Lopez opened up in the third round. Once Lopez let his hands fly, Rivera didn’t really seem to want to be there. A sweeping right cross from Lopez dropped Rivera for a count of 9. Rivera got up but took a knee once the assault continued and chose to watch the referee count him out rather than fight onward. By way of a TKO victory at 2:58 of the third round, Lopez improves to 28-3 (16KO) while Rivera falls to 25-6-2 (16KO). (more…)

Cordoba-Rigondeaux a toss-up?

By Robert Coster

It is probably a more intriguing match than Pacquiao vs. Margarito, the main event in Arlingtom tomorrow night. It opposes two talented boxers in a real toss-up battle. One battler hails from Panama, a former world champion with over 41 bouts. The other is from Cuba, a two time Olympic champion and amateur legend but with only six pro fights. Both are southpaws. Both are conscious that their clash will very likely determine the rest of their career. A loss here in Arlington is simply devastating. We are referring, of course, to the intriguing matchup between Ricardo Cordoba (37-2-2, 23 KOs) of Panama and Guillermo Rigondeaux (6-0, 5 KOs) of Cuba. (more…)

Steward working with Salita

Legendary boxing trainer Emanuel Steward has told the Jewish News how he believes Dmitriy Salita has what it takes to become a world champion again. Steward will be training Salita for his December 16 clash against “Mighty” Mike Anchondo, but insists there isn’t actually much work to do. “He’s in good shape already, he’s been training very well,” he said. “He’s a good boxer so there won’t be much to do with him, he will be in excellent condition for this fight and I am very much confident for him. I will be there in the ring with him and I think he can be very good, can make a good comeback and become champion – he’s a very special talent.”

Salita’s boxing career has only so far made headlines for his 76-second loss to Amir Khan last December, though to Steward that defeat counts for nothing. (more…)

Oloukun TKOs Airich

Late sub Gbenga “Bang Bang” Oloukun (19-6, 12 KOs) scored a surprise third round TKO over Konstantin Airich (16-3-2, 13 KOs) in a good action heavyweight bout on Friday night at the Vogelsang Halle in Stralsund, Germany. Both fighters had landed big shots in the fight before Olougun leveled Airich hard with a crushing left hand in round three and the bout was stopped moments later. Oloukun was actually the third scheduled opponent for Airich this week after bouts with original foe Yakup Saglam and last-minute replacement Levan Jomardashvili both fizzled. It was a big win for the Nigeria-born fighter who had lost six of his last eight, but also had a win over former heavyweight champion Lamont Brewster during that spana.

Former German amateur standout Erkan Teper (2-0, 2 KOs) needed 63 seconds to annihilate Alexander “The Great“ Kahl (15-7-1) in another heavyweight bout.
