Elorde dangles P5-million signing bonus to Pacquiao!

October 1, 2004

By Dennis Principe

With Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao reportedly restless owing to the inability of his handlers to corner a meaningful bout, registered manager Martin Luis Elorde has come up with something that may at least reduce the pressure off the Filipino boxing superstar's fidgety situation.

The youthful Elorde, son of the late boxing great Flash Elorde, is offering Pacquiao a five-year contract extension of their original agreement, made even better with a cool 5-million peso signing bonus (around US$90,000.00).

Elorde, who quietly worked behind the scenes in charting Pacquiao's road to success, still has a live pact with Pacquiao that will end February 2005.

"I believe Manny deserves more than what I am offering. But so far this is what I can offer. After all, I am still his manager so I guess now is the right time for me to work on a possible extension of our existing agreement" revealed Elorde.

On February 5, 2000, Elorde struck up a five-year deal with Pacquiao with a P1-million signing bonus and a monthly stipend of P10,000.00.

Apart from the 5-million signing bonus, Elorde is ready to double Pacquiao's monthly allowance to P20,000.00.

This time however, Elorde intends to work in close coordination with Pacquiao himself when it comes to charting the boxer's succeeding bouts.

"I want Manny to learn the tricks of the trade. With my experience I believe I can be of help to Pacquiao's future at least in the business aspect of this sport" disclosed Elorde who is credited for leading ex-world champ Rolando Bohol to the IBF flyweight crown in 1988.

Elorde also had the opportunity of cornering a two-year, $2.5 million promotional deal from DiBella Entertainment for Pacquiao, but was later turned down by the boxer's business manager Rod Nazario in favor of M&M Sports of American promoter Murad Muhammad.

Elorde also won't be having Nazario as his business manager for this particular offer.

In their original 5-year deal, Elorde has given Nazario authority to negotiate fight deals on behalf of the manager.

Elorde though added that it is still all up to Pacquiao if the latter wants to retain Nazario.

"They can still continue their agreement but definitely I won't be retaining our original agreement of Mr. Nazario representing me in Pacquiao's future deals." Added Elorde.

Elorde also said his business partners from Japan won't be part of this latest offer.

Elorde was accused of being a dummy of two wealthy Japanese businessmen who are said to be the real investors in Pacquiao's contract.

"Honestly, I will be having a group of Filipino businessmen as partners in this latest offer." Revealed Elorde who declined, for the moment, to reveal the names of his partners.
