Q&A: Joan "Little Tyson" Guzman!

April 25, 2005

By Jose Reyes

After his decision win over tough contender to the title Fernando "Wary" Beltran, at the sold out Dodge Arena Friday night, Joan "Little Tyson" Guzman sat down with Fightnews.com in his dressing room and gave us his take on the fight and that he wants Juan Manuel Marquez at 126 and whoever is at 130 because he plans to conquer that division too. Read on to what the future holds for the WBO super bantamweight champ.

Guzman....
First of all I would like to send some salutations to everyone in Indio California. To all the boys who helped me train, to Lee Espinoza.

Was this the fight you anticipated against Beltran?
No, not at all. I thought that I would be able to KO "Wary" but... how they say, he came out very strong and he is a tremendous fighter, I give him a lot of credit.

You used your boxing skills tonight.
Yes, I said it all along, that "Wary" Beltran was going to bring out the tiger in me which is said in my country of Dominicana. He helped bring out that extra that is brought out in boxers.

It took you some time, to figure him out, being that he is a southpaw?
Yes, because I really didn't know how he fought, how he was. I didn't know him. My gameplan I did it in ring. I didn't know how he would come out in the ring.

In what round did you feel you hurt him?
Yes, in the first round I gave him a body shot, and then I felt that I could knock him out early. At the end of the round I went to my corner I asked them how I looked and they told me to keep up the pressure, but it was the inactivity that I could not find that I didn't have the ring.

So, you think that contributed to your performance tonight?
Yes, yes, my inactivity in boxing. I need to fight more so I can find the floor of the fighters, because I want to do.... I have the conditioning but I don't have the ring. It's what I need, the ring..the fight...the heat of the ring. That is what I am missing. Thanks to god I lasted the twelve rounds, my last fight I went ten and I am adjusting, I needed this twelve rounds.

The decision of the judges was very spread out. One of the judges had you winning most if not all of the rounds and another had the fight in your win decision by one round. How did you see the fight?
Well, I saw, I would ask my corner. How am I doing? Am I winning? They would say, "yes you're winning" and I was working... because I will be honest with you, I will confess, I was in good condition but I was missing the ring, I needed that time I lost when I didn't fight.

Oh your condition was very visible, cause in the 12th round you threw some lightning speed combinations...(interrupted me)
But I missed the ring, I was missing the ring.

You mean the timing?
Yes, the timing, how you say. But now thanks to god I have those twelve rounds and perhaps my manager Jose Nunez, we will fight in June and we will keep fighting constantly because that is what I want.

Many have asked why the fight with Oscar Larios has not come, maybe because of money?
No, no, no. I signed the fight with Larios for the same amount that I was paid for this fight. What happened was that he got injured. What I want is to unify the titles, (122 pounds) to unify the titles because I want to jump to the 126 pound division and the 130 pound division. I fought for the same amount I was going to fight with Larios that was a unification I fought with this man "El Wary". So money is not a problem. I am fighting to be the undisputed champion.

That is what you want? Conquer the 122 pound division and then ascend to the 126 pound and maybe the 130 pound division?
Yes, Conquer and then go to the 126 and 130 where all the tremendous fighters are.

Who do you want at 126?
Who ever is there, Juan Manuel Marquez who ever is at 130, I have the size for 130.
