| La Villita card! June 13, 2005 By Christian Schmidt at ringside It was a solid night of boxing at La Villita in San Antonio, TX this past Friday night. The card delivered pro debuts and some red hot up and coming San Antonio prospects. Lightweight prospect Jay Martinez(3-0) remained undefeated as he outworked fellow San Antonian Jesse Ortiz(2-5-2) with scores of 39-37, 40-36, 38-38. Heavyweight James Downey(1-1) won a rugged battle over Oswaldo "Pyscho" Martinez in a brawl with scores of 40-36, 40-36, 39-37. In the fight of the night, female boxers Shawnta Burton(0-2-1) battled Bianca Ledezma(0-0-1) to a draw. The crowd reacted with a lot of boos as most fans thought Ledezma won. Victor Guiterrez(3-0) defeated Victor Rodriguez(5-5) in a fight that included many exciting exchanges. Scores were 58-56, 59-55, 59-55 all for Guiterrez. In the main event, Bantamweight prospect Raul "La Cobrita" Martinez(9-0) met a tougher than thought challenge when he faced Mexican Benito Abraham(9-7-3). Martinez had Abraham in trouble many times in the first round, however the Mexican managed to weather the storm each time. Martinez had Abraham in trouble at the end of the fifth round and could have been saved by the bell. The sixth and final round was the most exciting as both fighters went for knock outs. Martinez won a unanimous decision with scores of 58-56, 59-55, and 59-55. The card was promoted by Tom Ozzene of Team Freedom. Referees were Ruben Carrion and Rafael Ramos. |
