Micky Ward movie update!

November 24, 2003

By Lisa Scott

On Friday, "Irish" Micky Ward was in attendance at the Clottey-Santiago fight in New York City. Appearing to be in tremendous spirits, the hero from Lowell, Massachusetts graciously signed autographs and posed for photos for his many fans. Ward told Fightnews, "Retirement is going pretty good. I'm enjoying myself and taking it easy. I still do a little running and my weight is now at 165. I feel great!"

Last year, talk of a motion picture about the story of Ward and his brother Dicky Eklund was being considered and those named to star in the film were fellow Massachusetts actors Mark and Donnie Wahlberg. Yet, several months ago Ward engaged in a lawsuit against Scout Productions, Edgartown Ventures and Fourth Wall Entertainment.

Ward sought to terminate a contract that he signed which would have granted the film rights of his life story to the three companies. Micky claimed that he had been duped into signing over those rights and at the time of the signing, had no legal counsel or no knowledge of the immense value that comes with securing those rights.

However, Ward reached a settlement with the three entities last week which resulted in the dismissal of his lawsuit and a revision of their original contract, granting Ward option payments and future percentages should the film be completed. Ward states "I'm glad everything has been worked out. Lou (DiBella) and my manager Sal (Lonano) will be working on the movie as technical consultants. It ought to be a great movie."
