King Arthur wins bizarre bout! February 21, 2004 By William Trillo at ringside
In one of the more bizarre endings seen in recent fights, former cruiserweight champion Arthur Williams (37-9-1, 26 KOs) was declared the winner of the battle of 200 pounders at 1:12 of the first round when his foe, Marcus Harvey (7-10-2, 1 KO), threw a straight right hand that missed it's mark and sent Harvey face first into the canvas in screaming agony. As Harvey lay prone on the canvas a confused Williams went to his corner and watched as Harvey was attended to by the ring doctors. With Harvey seemingly unable to move his right shoulder the bout was halted and Williams was declared the winner in a bout that saw very few punches thrown. Harvey was strapped to a Gurney and taken from the ring for further observation. When asked what happened, Williams said, "I don't know. It looks like he quit to me. This is one of the worst things that has ever happened in my career." As for the rest of the night, All Events Unlimited promotions put together an exciting night of fights at the Norwalk Ramada Inn. On a evening chock full of four rounders, Alvaro Morales and Jose Ortiz made their pro debuts in a action packed 140 pound affair. Morales took an early lead but tired quickly and in a war of attrition Morales barely held on to take a majority decision by scores of 38-38,38-37,38-37. The second fight of the night pitted heavyweights Jason Williams ( 8-3, 5 KOs) vs. David Johnson (1-5-2). The bout started out more like a wrestling match as the fighters threw each other to the canvas, prompting Referee Raul Cais Jr. to take a point from Williams for his rough house tactics. But in the second round Johnson went into a turtle like shell and Williams landed a series of body shots that dropped Johnson and put an end to the bout at 1:26. The next bout saw 271-pound John Clark (6-3-1,4KO's) overpower the much smaller 206 pound Randy Brown ( 0-0). Clark took a unanimous decision on all cards, 40-35. In another bout of fighters making their pro debuts in the 160 pound division, a forty-something Joey Aragon took on a much younger David Penuela. After putting Penuela down twice in the first round, Aragon held on and did enough to take an exciting split decision with scores of 37-36 in favor of Penuela and two scorecards of 37-36 going to the victorious Aragon. The last bout of the night saw 114 pounders Giovanni Segura (4-0-1,3KO's) take on Sadi Warandu ( 0-1). In an impressive performance, Segura dropped Warandu twice in the first round with marksman like combinations to the head. After the second knockdown, Referee Raul Caiz Jr. Brought a merciful halt to the fight at 1:07 of the first round. |
